I had the same story when we had a winter storm last year. Some guy in a astro van slid off of the high way. I drove by stoped, hooked my tow ropes to his front frame and pulled him right out. Its always nice to help people, especialy when it is fun towing stuff haha

I cleared a road off the ortega highway here in SoCal a couple winters ago. A guy in a little chevy 1/2 ton had tried unsuccessfully, and could not get home to his two teenage daughters he had left to go get groceries.

Needless to say it was a piece of cake for the mighty X.

There's no substitue for a big heavy vehicle when it comes to trying to pull or extracate things that do not want to move.

About 2 or 3 years back, I managed to get my Dodge fairly well stuck in a ditch. How did we retreive it? 44-passenger International school bus! Ok, it's not an Excursion, but it was quite a sight to see!

Snurtle, what kind of winch setup do you have and how is it mounted? I've been thinking about getting one for mine but am uncertain how exactly I want to do it. Thanks!

its a mile marker 12000..which is 12,000lb winch.electric.its a lil custom mounted bracket..it didnt over heat or struggle whatsoever even though the rig i was pulling out couldnt be more then 3k lbs,but still.its a good winch and theres a new model coming out for mile marker so you can get the old model for fairly cheap.6-700 range..heres a pic

I would be a happy man if i was driving a car and got rescued by that thing. Nice truck man. Quietman, awesome pictures. It sucks to have to use ur hitch to pull someone out ever time. Those tow hooks are sooo convienent but u cant use them on heavy loads with 2wd though

One thing that you have to be VERY careful about are the laws in your state regarding towing people out.. In our state, unless you are a licensed tow operator, you can be held liable for ANY damage caused to anything you are doing...I used to have a '70 Toyota Landcrusher station wagon and for their era, they were real tanks.. Anyway,I had a Warn 8,000# winch and was pulling a guy out of a snow bank once and was warned by a state trooper about it.. I had no idea there were rules concerning it... He told me to finish the job as the guy was blocking traffic and there were no tow trucks available...

Not to throw water on your post, but check your local laws...

It always annoys me when laws are put in place that prevent you from being a good Samaritan... oh well.

For me it depends on how bad its stuck and how much it weighs. Since i have 2wd, the heavy loads that are stuck, i have to hook it to my hitch. for the rest i hook it to my front tow hooks. Im surprised by how much it can pull out with the tow hooks with RWD. I also dont have the torque like u 4x4 ppl have cause i dont have a transfercase

interesting...i think im gonna try next time to use my hooks.see what works... im curious what do you do when you cant get traction?the reason i ask is at first before i started reeling in the winch i thought i could just hook it up and put it in reverse and pull it out in 2wd but the clay wet road i just dug HUGE holes and slid around.im wondering how you guys do it?

It all depends on the situation u are in. Pavement, dirt, clay, etc. If i had 4x4 and i was pulling things out, i would always have it in 4L no matter what. What did you have it in when u where trying to pull it out
