What's going on? Too Much Torque???

I had this thread in another column then realized that being that I have a lifted 4X4, this section might have an answer.

OK, see if anyone can figure this out. I have a 351W in my truck that is moderately built. I have the four speed on the floor and a 4:56 gear in the rear. (It's a 4X4 on 35 inch tires with a four inch suspension lift and two inch body lift) All steering parts, bushings, brakes, etc, etc. are all new parts.

Here's the problem:

When I get out on the road and step hard on the accelerator, all is well. When I let off the accelerator quickly and press the clutch to change gears the truck wants to pull hard to the right. Could the torque of the engine be loading the front springs enough that when I let off of the gas it wants to unload and do that??? I know it is not the brakes as it only occurs for a split second after letting off of the accelerator.

I didn't think that windsor and too much torque could be used in the same sentence!

Kidding!

I don't think that torque would cause what your expieriencing. But as to what is causing it I'm not sure, sorry.

I agree about the toomuch torque part. 99 and 44/100ths% sure it is not too much torque, but it could be a bad bushing, either up front, IE radius arm c-bushing, or a spring bushing in the rear is shot. Could be moving back and forth changing the wheelbase slightly, and causing the pull.
How much of a block are you running in the rear? You could also have an axle wrap issue that is causing this problem. If the shocks unload the axle at different rates it might cause a pull, maybe???? MAybe not, but I do think the bushings deserve a good inspection.

I didn't even think about axle wrap. I am sure that is a contributing factor. I do have the stock ford blocks in the rear and original leaf springs with an Add-A-Leaf. I know it's not perfect, but I am making do right now until I can have some custom springs made for the rear.

All bushings are brand new.

Alright, so next question is...how did u get a 4inch SL and keep the stock leaves and ford block....do you have blocks in the rear or not.....axle wrap could be cocking the truck sideways....I've seen it happe on a dodge...then the u-bolts stretched and broke goin down the road.....

the add a leaf shouldn't make axle wrap worse, if anything it should prevent it.

does it only do it when you get on it hard or any time you let off the throttle?

Is it only when you let off on the throttle AND depress the clutch?

are the rear U-bolts tight? they could have loosened since the addition of the leaf.

Power steering?

are the motor mounts tight? (It'd take too long to type out what that could POSSIBLY do

Hubs unlocked?

Just trying to get more info.

Seeing that we aren't actually driving the truck to know everything, we'd need ALL the possible info like 78F250crewcab4x4 was saying/asking.

haven't heard of this problem before...... puzzleing.

quadzjr, why you selling the Bronco, and I'll buy it if you'll deliver it for a case of beer! He!l, I just saved $4000 for a beater car that'd get 35+ mpgs, but this sounds better.

To answer your questions 78250crewcab4X4, If I am driving nice and easy, letting off the gas easy than pressing the clutch easy to shift, I do not have the problem. It only happens when I get on it hard and let off quickly. I assume it is doing it when I let off the gas and press the clutch, because I do both of those almost simultaneously. The clutch may not have anything to do with the problem.

Yes, I do have power steering and the hubs are, indeed, unlocked and all other components are tight. I am thinking that if I have some custom made rear leaf springs made that will eliminate the rear blocks and stiffen up the rear, that the problem may go away.

There are photos in my gallery of the truck.
