Exclamation 6.9 IDI into '77 F250 4wd

OK, here's what I have:

Donor:
1986 F250 2wd 6.9 IDI/C6 trans. Rolled over, frame tweaked, body
and roof damage but plenty of good parts. Still cranks and runs.
126,000 miles

Victim:
1977 Ford F-250 XLT Ranger 4WD longbed with anemic 400 ci V8/
C6 married NP205 combo. Everything great except the engine- one
cyl. head cracked. I really don't want to rebuild it or swap it out
with a 460. Thought about a 351. Then dismissed it when I found the
donor. I'd rather rebuild and Banks Turbo a 6.9.

Both are paid for. The wife has a new Lexus. I will not be hindered.

I know the 6.9 weighs in more than the 400. On the upside I have all
the parts from a donor. Both trannies are the same- C-6s, and I think the bellhousings are the same. May need to get a diesel C-6 4WD trans, don't know if the gas C-6 can be beefed up with parts or how much is interchangeable.

I've come across 2WD versions of this swap, but not a 4WD. Any ideas, bits
of wisdom, caveats, puzzled looks all welcome.

Thanks!

Mark

Wkite Knight I have a 76 with a 6.9 it is 4sp with divorced 205 made it easier you will have to use diesel trans but complete tear down is in order to use tail shaft out of 4x trans and tail housing. some chevys had splines long enough all you had to do was cut tailshaft off and swap tail housing. you will probabily want a small body lift because the bellhousing has to be twisted just right to remove impossible with a trans hooked to it

I'm almost done with mine! I put a 6.9 ATS Turbo in my 79 F250 Super Cab. I would do a 3" body lift if it was me. It gave the Turbo plenty of room and easy to work with. You need the Gas tranny output shaft for your C6 Diesel tranny and put the Diesel governor back on it. You will need to cut and box in the front cross member (for the oil pan).

I used the 2 plates (where the motor mounts sit on and connect to the frame )out of a 85 Ford. On the passenger side (on the 79) I plated the left side of the frame, so it was nice and flat across the top and drilled my 2 holes for the mounting plate.

On the driver side I had to make a mount and weld it to the frame (an L shape bracket with gussets). Used the mounting plate and bolted it to the L shape bracket. Then I welded up a cross member to tie in the 2 plates together across the bottom!

I'll take some pictures here and you can see for yourself.....

Diesel and gas bellhousings are not the same, and will not interchange in any way. Internal parts should be the same, and even if not, C6 parts are cheap on Ebay.

There seems to be a lot of these 70s diesel conversions out there lately . Please post pictures.

Thanks guys!

I went ahead and got a 3" body lift kit,
so that worked out good. I'll research
the tranny part- ran across a rebuilder
whose specialty is C6s. Please post
those photos- especially of the cross
member mod- do you think the '86's
mount brackets would work? Thanks
again, as I can I'll put in the pix of my
rig!

I did say that. BUT you will need the output shaft of the gas tranny and install it on you C6 Diesel tranny! They made 2 different output shafts and you need to use the longer one to get it to work. Otherwise the Diesel will be right in the firewall & it uses a shorter adapter (unlike the 70's C6 adapters). JMHO
