strange Tinging noise
Got a new 2008 F-350 and got about 3000 KMs on it and a new tinging noise just started last night. It sounds like putting a screwdrvier in a metal fan....... It only happens every now and then and cannot make it happen on demand.
it's only happend a half a dozen times and seem like it happens at a idle but could be happening a higher RPM but just can't hear it..
has anyone had a similar problem?

Was this under load?
I noticed when pulling my 5th wheel last week I would occassionally hear a noise that sounded like spark knock with a gas engine; not when getting into the throttle but usually on tip out or real light throttle. Long and steady at some light throttle situations. Have not heard when not towing.

Do you know where the noise is coming from? I have a 2008 F-350 with the V-10 and I get a buzzing sound around 1400rpm's. I think I've narrowed it down to the heat shield surrounding the muffler because at idle one day it made the noise and I put my finger on the shield and it stopped. I know your truck is a diesel and may be different but I hope this helps you out.

I don't know if it's just when I start it up for the first time of the day.
I'll have to see if it goes away.

I just got that sound yesterday after coming home from Oregon towing my trailer..11K miles on truck. Got home fine, then went to move the truck and yea, sounded like someone put a screwdriver in a metal fan..WTF is that...Hard to Duplicate but I have heard it at least 5 times yesterday driving it around trying to figure out what it is. 2 times it sounded pretty bad..Anyone know what it might be? Hate to take it to the dealer and not be able to duplicate it.

SOME 2008 F250-550 SUPER-DUTY EQUIPPED WITH A 6.4L DIESEL ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT A RANDOM TICKING/TAPPING NOISE THAT IS MOST AUDIBLE ON A HOT ENGINE AND IS MOST NOTICEABLE AT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE AND INSIDE THE FRONT WHEEL WELLS. THE NOISE RESONATES THROUGH THE CYLINDER BLOCK AND OR HEADS IS HEARD AS A METALLIC TICKING OR TAPPING SOUND, LIKE A SPARK PLUG WIRE ARCING OR LIFTER TICK.THE TICKING OR TAPPING NOISE CAN COME AND GO AND HAS A NONRHYTHMIC PATTERN. ENGINEERING IS AWARE OF THIS NOISE AND HAS AN INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY. AT THIS TIME, THE NOISE IS CONSIDERED AS A NORMAL OPERATING CHARACTERISTIC OF THE ENGINE. THE NOISE HAS NO SHORT OR LONG TERM EFFECTS ON THE ENGINE. DEALERS SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO COMPARE ANY CUSTOMER VEHICLES EXHIBITING THIS NOISE WITH OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES AS THE NOISE IS DIFFERENT FROM VEHICLE TO VEHICLE. MONITOR OASIS FOR UPDATES.

I had a noise recently, it was only when towing a heavy load and above 2500rpm on a long hill or hill start. It's a metalic noise kind of like a soda can rattling at a really fast pace, but it sounded like it was coming from under the dash. I couldn't get it to repeat with out the trailer in tow though but it sure is freaking anoying!

TSB 07-24-2 6.4L ENGINE BUILT BEFORE 06/18/2007 - HEATER CORE NOISE - ALSO DESCRIBED AS GURGLING, RATTLE, OR SCRAPING NOISE
This article supersedes TSB 07-22-2 to update the description in the Issue statement. ISSUE:
Some 2008 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.4L engine and built before 6/18/2007 may exhibit a gurgling type noise coming from the heater core. It has also been described as a rattle or scraping noise. It has also been incorrectly identified as a torque converter concern.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Bring engine to normal operating temperatures.
- Raise engine RPM to 2500-2900 range.
- Using a hose clamp tool, crimp the heater inlet hose. If the noise goes away, replace the inlet heater hose.
- If the noise does not go away, proceed with normal diagnostics. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 100-04.
