Change the external transmission filter, Motorcraft PN FT-145. It's in an aluminum canister under the front passenger side of the truck, below the radiator.

You should consider adding a coolant filter from Dieselsite: www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=324
That helps keep casting sand a other junk out of the cooling system, including the oil cooling system.

Research and choose a good fuel additive. I use Stanadyne and add 2% Biodiesel for lubricity.

Research and choose a good synthetic oil

ONLY use the proper filters - NO "WILL FIT" filters

Change oil filter every 5M miles

Change fuel filters every 10M miles

Drain the HFCM (fuel filter under frame) whenever you are changing the oil filter, unless you are at 10M miles and changing the fuel filters.

Use the filter minder to change the air filter. I am like you, whenever I get a vehicle (new or used), I change the filters pretty quick just to make sure they are installed correctly (and the proper ones). On our trucks, it is a pain to install the air filter AND the fuel filter under the frame. I have heard of multiple cases of them being installed wrong or cheap substitutes being used.

manual

Hey fellas,

Thanks. I HAVE a manual, and I HAVE read it. But sometimes, the manuals say things like (in my gassers) "change oil at 7500 miles. Well, we ALL know that 3k miles for a gasser is best, unless it synthetic. So what I was asking for (and got thanks to some) is a real world scenario for maintenance.

Real-world maintenance intervals I use for my truck:
Oil & filter every 4-5k miles using Motorcraft 15w40 and Racor filters
Fuel filters every 15k using Ford or International filter kit
Air filter every 30k using Ford (donaldson) filter
Transmission filters and ATF fluid change every 30k
Drain HFCM every month or so
Rotate tires every 7500
Change brake fluid every 2 years
Everything else by the manual or as needed

I agree mostly with the above except that I change my air filter according to the gauge/minder (But that's mainly because it's a pain to do) and I'm lazy on the tire rotations, but mine are wearing great! When in doubt, ASK! If you have any questions about filter or fluid brands, ASK! If you have any questions about part numbers (Ford or IH), ASK! If you have any questions about fluid amounts, ASK! You'll be glad you did! Or you can always look up previous posts because this has all been discussed a ton of times before.
