2008 Expy- "PHONE" button.

Phone Button
I tested it again today and the phone button on my Nav head unit does absolutely nada. If you read the manual, it doesn't specifically mention muting on the NAV unit. It says that it may provide additional functionality and to discuss it with the dealer. This info is in the Nav manual and not the Expy manual itself.
I'll ask the dealer again now that the 08s have been out a while. When I asked originally, they had no idea why it didn't do anything.

Read through the previous posts... my 08 has Mobile-Ease installed and when in use, the phone mutes the radio. It’s all automatic, meaning pushing the phone button does nothing, but gets used automatically by the Mobile-Ease when in use.

My 2008 Sable with Sync, pressing the phone button on the radio or on the steering wheel initiates the phone mode and mutes the radio. My radio is not the Nav unit.
If, and that is a big if, Sync is ever made retrofittable, then this button may be functional then. My information (salesman) says that Snyc will not be retrofittable. That is why we ordered the car specifically with it and other options that we couldn't find on any dealer lot. Good luck!

Mine mutes the sound. It's an older style icon that was used a while back. Now that there are bluetooth, etc, it should have more of a function, sure. But look at the radio, it's design is 10+ years old.
