I don't haul as much as you'll be towing but I know I could if needed.
I've added a Gale Banks kit, Helwigs, Prodigy, Ride Rite Air Bags and a rebuilt HD tranny to my 2000 w/ 7.3 and it is great combination. I haul a very tall 8K trailer. Before the mods I could go up our local mountain pass at about 45 mph. Now I can easily do 60. Fuel mileage towing is about 8.5-9.5. I hope to see a mileage improvement when I switch to something a bit taller and narrower than my current 305-55x20 tires.

I have a 24' Ragen Toyhauler, 27' ball to butt, max GVWR is 11,600, my Ex tows it great, makes sure you have the equalizer hitch/load leveler with 1000 or 1200 bars. I also have a 5" lift with 35" tires. I agree with someone else mentioning the load dist. I had my Polaris quad in the rear once and bikes over the axles, lots of up and down movement, keep the majority of weight over trailer axles, with a slight amount to the front.
On trailer length,,, I have towed a 31 box Weekend warrior, 34' ball to butt, and it was LONG, you manuverability is down, and your fueling choices need to be scouted with the longer ones.
By the way, my ToyHauler is for sale.... anyone?! $15000 RVTrader.com - 2004 Rage N 2427P Large Front Bathroom - Ad Number 1292930 at RVT

I can't comment on the V10's power pulling, as I have the 6.0, but I love towing things with my X. I even look for opportunities to pull things with my X.

We currently have a 28' enclosed trailler that was designed to be a race car unit. We use it to haul hardwood stairs. Our most recent trips involved travelling from Penetanguishine (Ontario) to Bridgeport CT. We generally took Hwy 17 through the mountains (for those who know it).

The trailer pulls well ... both full and empty... although we found that varying the trailer and truck tire pressures made the whole rig behave better. Empty, the trailer was likely around 1800 lb. Maybe as much as 2500lb. Full... we had around 10000 lb in it.

Like others have said, weight distribution and brake controller are essential. We also found that the Goodyear Silent Armor (265/76 E) that we put on were far better than the stock tires Ford shipped (were also E, but I forget the brand --- they sucked).

In terms of towing experience, we found that any bad behaviour we found (in the stock truck) was fixed with a combination of tire pressure changes.

Now... with the Diesel and the 3.73 gears (and, it turns out, a 2" hole in the turbo pipe between the turbo and the intercooler), the whole rig was able to hold at least 65 on those grades.

I also did 11000 km with a 9500 lb 32' travel trailer. Pretty much same experience.

Just gotta put another vote in for the equilizer hitch. Properly set up you will forget the trailer is even back there. The anti-sway feature is unbelieveable. Tow my 8000# t/t with 980# of tounge weight like it's not even there stability wise. Just take your time and let the V-10 do it's job. It's a work horse not a race horse. Enjoy the trip, half the fun is getting there.
