351w timing issues

I rebuildt my 351w and put a new distributer in that seized up while the truck was running, i fixed this problem and now having a problem with getting the timing set just right. throttle response is good, but have a light ping but sounds like its in the header not the motor. going uphill in 4th gear about 35-40mph knda gets doggie.??? not sure what to do, i've set timing several times to check and triple check it! any suggestions?

what is your timing currently set at? I would venture a guess that your timing curve (built into your dizzy) that is too agressive. Try a lower initial timing, or try running premium fuel. Premium fuel will burn slower. This will help detonation.

What did you change on your motor from stock? Did you change your compression ratio, install a non factory cam, details details details.

Cool

yeah well i did change the cam to a stage 1 or class 1 how ever you choose to say it. sorry but this is my first motor rebuild and not a mechanic, but i went by the the rebuild book for ford small blocks to the T. So anyway I played with it today and drove it about 20 miles and seamed to be running great, then backfire and motor died. Pulled distributer and all the teeth were either paper thin and bout 1/3 of them sheired off! and so now the gear on the cam if chewed up. so back to pullin the motor again i guess, unless anyone has suggestions. thanks for your time and info!
