oil pump screen clogged

How do you clean the oil pump screen. Does the screen come off the pump? It sounds like it may be much better to just replace the pump/ screen/ driveshaft, because it's alot of work to get to the pump?

hard to clean the screen because it is partially covered.

replace your oil screen pickup/oil pump.

if you do not remove pan from truck 2-3 hour job.

Thanks,
Today I got out the pump and screen. Now how do i align the oil pump driveshaft back in place, do I have to just keep tring to find the top hole? Any tips? CAN I PUT THE SHAFT ON THE PUMP AND RAISE the pump in place, and hope it works? I still have the oil pan under the truck so its hard to see to align the shaft in place.

Everything under the engine, with the oil pan lowered, is caked in solid baked oil!! Is that because the last owner didn't change the oil ?

Either didn't change the oil or used really cheap oil that burned off easily. You should be able to raise the pump up with the shaft in it.

i recommend to put the pump up once with no gasket or bolts and kind of feel how it goes on.

the drop it straight down, put gasket on and push back up and put the bolts.

then relax and get the pickup/screen and put that on, i think it has a gasket also, maybe not.

make sure you clean gasket off the pan well and get all of the pieces out of the pan.

watch the rear part of the pan gasket to make sure it is on right.

good luck.

I would run some seafoam in the oil before you drain it to replace the pump.

they usually snap.

you can remove the dist. to get to it.

it is probably ok.

did the oil screen look clogged?

if the pan is real gunked up, like you say, it may be a good idea to remove the pan and clean it.

I can see through all the hole in the oil screen, so it looks ok ??? Do the holes get completly filled with hard burn oil if bad?

How hard is it to remove the dist. to lower the oil pump shaft? It must fit right the pump hole, then there's putting the dist. back in the same place.

the tube itself and the covered screen gets clogged.

like i said the shaft is probably ok.

from this and your other post i recommend dropping the pan and cleaning everything the right way.

Still low to zero oil pressure

I just replaced the oil pump and screen. I get 40 psi at startup, then drops to 10 psi. After a short drive it drops to zero psi. Strange.. the engine runs and sounds ok at zero psi. What gives? Is the mechnical gauge is bad? I unscrewed the plastic oil tube on the oil gauge and started the truck. The oil runs a full stream at 40 psi, then at 10 psi or below it only drips.

did you drop the pan?

you stated it was really gunked up an i suggested taking the pan out an dcleaning it and the oil drains and whatever else you can get to.

the valve covers and upper end can be cdirty and clogged also.

Take it to Ford for a hot oil flush. They pump the detergent in thru the fuel filter and out the drain plug. Cleans the oil pump pickup screen right out.

I had the same problem, ****ty oil pressure, valves were clattering. i had Ford flush the motor and it's good as new.

Sounds like worn bearings. As the engine warms the oil thins and hence you get the lower oil pressure upon warm up. I just had the same oil pressures with my truck (well close anyway 45 - 18 - 4). I am in the middle of a rebuild on that engine. while the crank looks to be ok and only slightly scratched the bearings were definitely worn(was into the copper). Might be time to think about a fresh bottom end.
