changing carb jets

Is it possible to rejet the factory 1 barrel carb, and if so, does anyone have any advice? And I know that it is too small and the intake is too restrictive, and that using this carb, I will ultimately be limited not by fuel, but by airflow. Nonetheless, with the dual exhaust and open element air cleaner, I am convinced that I am, or will be, running lean. So I was just wondering if anyone else has tried this.

my brother-in-law drilled out the jets in his old '83 f-100 and said that he could race decently. but he also added a new cam and ignition.
