Installing factory chrome on '08 mirrors help

I ordered the chrome package mirror pieces for my '08 SD. I haven't received them yet, but looking at '08's w/ chrome package at the dealer, it appears that the black upper part of the mirror comes off and the chrome piece replaces the black.
Ok, but how does the black part of the mirror come off? Or how does the mirror come apart?

all info AND pics appreciated!!!

The 08 mirrors are solid 1 piece design, they don't come apart.. The Chrome piece is identical to the painted caps, they just stick onto the back of the mirror.

No disrespect - but I don't think that is correct.
I HOPE you are right, but the top half of the mirror is a seperate - removable piece.

Storm is right. I already broke one of these mirrors. The outside is one piece and it cannot be removed, unless you smash it apart like I did

Pic in my gallary.

Which is it? "appears" to be removeable isn't the same as removeable.

Why don't you just wait for your parts to come in....

might be able to tell better how it works. Then when you can't figure it out, ask for help.

I am right.. I have 08 mirrors on my 04 and I also sell the mirrors.. You can't tear these mirrors apart.. We've broke several already trying to dismantle so that we could reverse the motors. On the 99-07, if you put 08 mirrors on, the switch is backwards for mirror operation.

Question, do you have the painted mirrors that match your body color? If you do then it's not the mirror.. That piece on the top that is painted to the match the truck is a cap that's stuck on.. You have to peel it off, it's just doubled sided tape. Here's a shot of the mirror without the cap, that I have on my truck.. It's nothing but a 1 piece design.. Except for those with painted mirrors/chrome packages, then Ford just adds a cap to the top that is double sided tape. It's not like the old mirrors where you pop 2 clips and that whole back piece comes off..

Ok, I have the parts in my hands.

The 08 Mirror is 2 piece design!
The top cap is held in w/ 2 screws or something. Then the cap slides up/off. The chrome piece then attaches in reverse.
Now, somehow, the upper mirror portion is removable. Once that is removed, then you can get to the screws that hold the cap on.
Now - how do you detach the upper mirror? I was told by a Ford tech that there is a clip of some sort that you remove, then the mirror swings down and out.

Anyone know the answer???

Storm:
I can fax you the parts breakdown sheet I received from Ford. It clearly shows the mirror is not 1 piece and it may help you. Just let me know your fax #.

Ok here's what I think

Ford has two types of Mirrors I can get.. Standard OEM (Non-Painted) and then the Painted OEM (Painted) version that you seen on Lariats etc.. Now the Standard OEM is about $450 for set, when I look at the Painted OEM the price jumps to about $1200.. I'm thinking that the Painted one is different design so that the cap can be removed/put on.. I need to go use the computer at Ford and do some research.. I'm going to drop by today and see my buddy who runs Parts..

I know the ones that go for $450 are just standard one piece designs...

I think the heated ones are 2 piece.
Storm, doesn't it say heated on the Ford sheet I faxed you? (I don't have it with me now)

Same here.. I have heated/signal mirrors.. This is what I'm thinking, Ford made several series of the mirrors..

Standard 1 - Mirror (no heat, no signal)

Standard 2 - Mirror, Heat and Signal - What I have

Standard 3 - Mirror, Heat, Signal and Painted (Found on Lariats, KR)

Standard 4 - Mirror, Heat, Signal, Power Extend/Fold

Standard 5 - Mirror, Heat, Signal Power Extend/Fold, Painted

I know Standard 2 is $450 from Dealer for me, Standard 3 is $1150. Thats just to have the mirror and cap, then you have to take the cap to get painted.

So I'm thinking that the Painted Mirror Option may very well be a 2 piece design versus Standard 1 and 2 which are 1 piece.. Question now lies for the mirrors with Power Fold/Extend that are not painted, are they the 1 piece design that Standard 1 and 2 are.

Doesn't surprise me that Ford would do this, they are known to mix parts up and generate 10 different designs.

Offshore1, I have a 08 tow mirror that is missing that black cap at the top you were talking about. Do you happen to know the part # for the drivers side black one? Would you be willing to sell the ones you removed? I really only need the drivers side but would buy both. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Even if you could give me the part # for the ones you ordered. Thx

I never got mine apart - tough to do because they turned out to be 1 piece.
Sorry I don't have the part #'s anymore.

Thread from the dead here..........

So the conclusion is that you cannot add the OEM chrome upper portion to a mirror that is all black plastic?
