Painted Wheels?

So I am tossing around the idea of new wheels, but I like the stock ones and wondered if anyone has ever painted their wheels. I would like them to be a darker color like graphite. Is this something that could be done with a rattle can or should I let a painter do it? Just trying to get some ideas.. Did a quick photoshop of what it would look like..

I've been thinking the same thing about mine. I like it, can you chop my factory 20's that color?

You could probably do it yourself, but the wheels may need to be stripped. I dont know if your wheels are clear coated but if they are you run the risk of having two different paint compositions, and blistering can occur. Just like painting anything, its all about the prep work (Any scuffing, sanding, cleaning that is required) and getting the paint to stick by following directions. I've heard duplicolor has some wheel paint in rattle cans that is pretty good, but i havent used it myself.

Or if you got the dough, get them powder coated.

That looks sick...Might be a back up plan to the KMC Monsters in Black.

I found a place that sandblasted and powder coated a set of 22" rims for $100 / rim. Definately the way to go if you plan on getting them painted.

The more I think about it, powdercoating is probably the way to go. It would just be a pain having to get the rims un/mounted then remounted.

Powdercoating would be the better way to do it, but.... if your already thinking of getting new wheels, then do your best painting them, and if they don't turn out the way you want or start to peel(or anything of the sort), then get your new wheels.
Either way, they would look pretty good!

Some of us have trucks that come with painted wheels like my 04 HD. They are not in the best of shape and I am going to look into some possibilities. One thing that I have seen done is to use bedliner spray as a rock guard and I am wondering if this will work on wheels. Powder coating on step bars doesn't seem to be the answer. Check out how many powder coated step bars are a mess after a couple of years.

Thats a cool idea. I never thought of LineX/Rhino on them. I have LineX in the bed but it didnt occur to me for wheels. I wonder how well it would hold up to the heat from the brakes.

I find many of the guys who do this type of work are pretty dedicated to their product and know what it is capable of. I will try to check with a couple of different installers tomorrow and if you do the same we should have a pretty good idea of whether it will work or not.

The box liner may be too soft (I know some brands feel fairly hard but still may be too soft) the coating may inbed rocks and debris into it making it hard to clean (and out of balance often). Anyone heard how the american racing teflon coated wheels are holding up.
