Metal on my dipstick...........

Past couple of days I have noticed that there is oil all over my trucks body and undercarriage. I figured "Oh great, what now" Well I then saw how it could be from the three replaced HPOP's and injector o-ring job. So I peered into the engine bay and there seems to be some residual oil puddled up in the valley. Must run out the back and down the tranny. Urregardless, I checked my oil level today to make sure I didnt have an oil leak and I noticed there were some metal shavings stuck to the end of my dipstick. I checked the oil five more times and each time, the dipstick came up with minimal metal shavings but shavings none the less. Its 1k over due for an oil change. My question being, is this normal? Should I be worried? What to look for?

guess that new motor is coming back apart again, should be no metal on that stick at all. IF there were any it should be stuck to the magnet on your drainplug. you have issues. my suggestion- drain-fill- run 2 minutes-drain fill run 1 minute-drain-fill run 1 minute-drain-fill-run 5 minutes and check for more, if none then let it sit and restart and check again.

Usually shavings in the oil comes from the bearings.

Send a oil sample off for anylisis. They can tell ya what kind of metal it is and give ya a good idea of where to look.

could be bearings, could be shavings from the 4 high pressure pumps you put on, could be from anything in the motor that moves in reality. define shavings. silver goo? or metal flakes? or shards of steel?

Dude that don't sound good. I would do as joe said change the oil. It is not cheap but go to wally world and get the volume discount. LOL Maybe you will get lucky and that is leftovers and/or stuff from the bearings but it is definately a good idea to flush, run, flush, run etc. Try putting a magnet on the dipstick to see if it pulls up shavings.

I wouldn't even use rotella to flush. I would find the cheapest 15W40 even if its not diesel rated to run in there to flush. even some 10W30. I would run the engine jsut enough to get it warm. drop the current oil, remove the filter and dump it out. repalce the filter and fill with new oil. Let it idle for about 10 minutes. repeat that 2 more times then refill with your normal oil and a new filter. When you drain the current oil get a quart of it in a clean bottle at about mid way thru the drain and keep that to get checked out by blackstone.

Its very possible this stuff came form your bad HPOP's. the same with the oil in the valley. Unless you cleaned the engine really well after the HPOP's thats where the oil came from.

i didnt even think about not usuing diesel....doh! its not like youre gonna drive it........
in that case get a couple cases of supertech 10w30, i beleive the 1030 is the cheapest stuff at walmart. i dont thikn i would run it that long, the first time i would change it after the truck sits over night, then i would agree with a longer run time, then change it again. good call on the oil sample
