Don't get too mad at me but...

I've been doing a lot of reading/research on 1 ton trucks because I'm considering doing some part time hauling. I'm actually having thoughts of selling my 7.3 and getting a Cummins. Talk me out of it, tell me why I should not do this.

because we would all shoot you
just kidding-

the powerstroke sounds much cooler than the cummins. and the trucks themselves hold up much better than the dodges

Yep Joe hit it one the head. The Cummins is a great engine. Too bad you have to buy a Dodge to get it. Thats a serious deal breaker. your truck will pull just fine. Even better after some mods!!

Hauling fuel for a truck stop I see tons, probably 50+ of those RVtrailer transporters, car transporters w/2-3cars behind a pickup a day.By far the Ford PSD is the king, second is the duramax, third and actually rare is the cummins. The cummins engine is a very good engine but the dudge trucks don't hold up mechanicly or in resale.

one of the guys in the central texas turbo diesel chapter (aka... cummins diesel club) went to the diesel nationals this weekend to pull and today when he pulled, he broke his rear axle. so in other words, while the engine may stay together, the cab, suspension, and every thing else will fall down around it.

tell me, that's why I posted this. I don't want to do something I'll regret. Maybe if I could have a Ford body, Cummins engine, and Allison tranny.

You can have a Ford body, Cummins engine, and an Allison transmission. Check out this used one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Custo...QQcmdZViewItem

Yes the Cummins is the better engine, but the 7.3 is very reliable and can have a lifespan as long as a cummins I have had 7.3's in the mid 300's and have had two of my guys with over 500k miles with no problems at all. Yes a CTD is cheaper to build up than a PSD, but for towing you don't need any more than a tuner and exhaust can provide. The Ford is the all around better truck and will last as long as the engine will not like the Dodge which will fall apart around that great engine. Think of it this way, a Dodge truck is a wounderful shipping crate for a Cummins engine!
