Thumbs down torque converter not engaging/disengaging

i have a 94 bronco with a 302 and an auto transmission. yesterday it started dying when i stoped. like a manual does when you dont disengage the clutch. then when i would restart it and try to go, it wouldnt engage till like 4k rpm. once im moving, it works pretty good, but going and stoping suck. what do youguys think?

pull codes, is your OD light blinking? is tranny fluid level full? could possible be the mlp solenoid on side of tranny as well.

Exclamation

Location of the MLPS(Manual Lever Position Sensor) depends on the transmission. E4OD is on the manual lever shaft on the side of the trans and it black, AODE is in the same place and black but the AOD is above the shaft in the case its round and silver with a five wire plug.

The E4OD had a problem with the filter falling out of the pickup hole and allowing the trans to suck air. It this happens it won’t have enough fluid to release the lockup clutch and kill the engine At stops. You would also not have enough fluid to keep it from slipping which will burn it up very quick. 10 sec. with enough slip will kill your trans.

Dumb question here- it was mentioned to me that the cam positioning sensor could cause this. True?

Try putting it in neutral before you stop and see if it still dies. If it does not die then put it in gear right after you stop. If it is the lockup converter then it should stall just like letting the clutch out on a standard with the brake on.

fords fix was a magnet under it. i think it was about 1/8 or 3/16's" thick and 2 1/2" long, they put it the pan under the filter by the neck that goes into the trans, the front of the filter. most new filters should have 3 or 4 bumps on the bottom to stop this from happening. the switch is called "MLPS(Manual Lever Position Sensor)" some call it a prindel(PRNDL) switch

We still don’t know what trans your have so I can’t tell you exactly where your sensor is. I don’t think it is the sensor. Have you checked your filter yet?

Here is a picture of mine on my 95 E4OD.

i took off the pan the other day, and the filter was setting in it, andd the seal was sill in the transmission. the fluid was a little dark, and had a little metal in it. i put a new filter in, put in some b&g transmission addative in from the shop where i work, then some lucas trans addative, then filled it the rest of the way with b&m trick shift fluid. it runs perfect now. thanks alot to mrknight01 and kemicalburns for tryin to help me out. that saved me ALOT of time and $
