I've had my 08 for about 5 weeks and have run a couple of tank loads of the ULS diesel. I think I have about 1500 miles on the odometer. On my last tank it looked like I was getting around 16.5 MPG. A heck of a lot less than I was led to believe. I'm hoping that it starts picking up after I hit the 2K mile mark.

There are loads of posts on this board on mileage numbers. It's all gonna depend on how your truck is set up, and how you drive it. You're probably gonna be getting between 12-18 mpg depending on your gears and transmission.

I've been averaging 17.5 mpg @ 65 mph in my 350 dually w/6-speed manual. I've alse been using Diesel Kleen fuel addative.

Mine reads 11.9-12.1 Make sure you get 3.73 gears, I would not get a dually again.
I have hand calc. the computer is very close.

Myself, I would wait to see if FORD has any fuel improvements in the new builds.

Thanks for the info, but it looks like this deal is a no go. Might just upgrade to a '08 F150 King Ranch.

That's the best way to go if that's all you need. But remember that Ford will soon be coming out with a 1/2 ton diesel!!!

My 08 has 6600 miles and I just treated the last fill-up with cetane booster. Driving at 55-60 over semi hilly interstate terrain we saw 20.1 mpg. This is the best we have ever gotten, in spite of having a quartering headwind. I just had it to the dealers 3 weeks ago and they recalibrated the computer to cure some driveability complaints including mileage of only 10 mpg because of constant regens.
Supercab, 8' box, 4x4, auto.

1/2 ton diesel, why? the are going to expensive, will they tow as much as 3/4 ton's...then buy a 3/4 ton. I don't see them getting huge gains in mpg cause of the emissions pkg. A SD F150???

I called the dealer about checking mine, he stated they will not put it on the computer until 7500 miles. Did it regen from the very start, or did it start at a certain mileage point?

My problems started on our vacation in July, the truck was delivered on June 5th. We filled up at the local truck stop were we have bought our fuel since 2001 with our 7.3. The mileage on the truck was about 2500 at that time. Drove for approximatly 90 miles when it began to surge and run very rough and leave black exhaust smoke. I drove for about a quarter of a mile untill I found a safe place to pull over. As we drove onto the shoulder there was a loud explosion (not a pop as the tech tried to discribe it) and a large cloud of black smoke in the rear view mirror. I thought at the time that we had probably lost part of the exhaust system. As we came to a stop the engine smoothed out and appeared to be running normally. We proceeded about 90 miles to the next major town with a dealership. They couldn't get to it that day so we proceeded on with no further incidents although the mileage (had been 17.5 to 18 @ 70-75 mph) began to deterorate. Each tank was worse than the last. Trip was completed at about 4500 miles. At this point the regens started and would not stop. We had one regen that lasted over 135 highway miles. The final straw was when the mileage dropped to 10 mpg. This was on the extended regen cycle. Took it to the dealer with a 3 page detailed report on what had and was occurring. They recalibrated the ECM and that apprears to have solved the problem but they couldn't explain what had happened or why the recalibration was going to solve it. I finally went by the dealer that I had bought my 2001 7.3 from and the former service manager explained what had happened. Apparently this was an instance of the "flame-thrower" phenomenm and that ford had had conciderable problems and that the recallibration changed the temperature that the O2 censors set off the active regen.
Don't know if this is the truth but it does make some sense and explains what happened.

My 08 is a F250 Super Cab, long bed, 2 wheel drive with 5 speed auto and 3.73. I have 11K miles on it. Use ford Cetane booster every tank full. Empty with in town and free way driving about 15 mpg (hand calc). On freeway towing about 4K at 70 mph, about 12-13mpg (hand calc).
This truck pulls better than my 07 F250 gasser work truck. The gasser gets 8 to 10 pulling same load. It also struggles up the hills without the skinny pedal to the floor.
I own both, and use both for work. I am a diesel guy, just make sure you buy what you want and need. If the money is not an issue, go with the 6.4, you won't regret it.

I knew GM was coming out with 1 - I hadn't heard Ford was yet due to their issues with their current diesel motor provider. Also heard of Toyota and Nissian doing something in this market as well - again first I heard of Ford doing something.

There is demend for that 1/2 ton configuration. If you could make a 1/2 ton diesel that got respectable mpg and could still pull a middle weight trailer - it'd be a hot seller. I know the 1 for GM was a smaller version of the Duramax - like 300hp and 520 ft/tq

Ford is not going to use International for the 1/2 ton diesel engine it will be built in their Mexico (FORD) plant and soon to follow will be the 6.4's replacement in the super duty line.
