Opinions on painting inside of engine
What are your guys opinions on painting inside the engine like in the valley where the lifters go. On my 360 So far I ordered the cam (Crower beast 16903) the main bearings and the rod bearings. Next on the list is to have the heads rebuilt and get adjustable rockers. Thanks. Eric

I've done it but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. Suppose to hold any dirt you missed in the paint and let the oil run back to the pan faster.

But My tip is spend a few hrs with a grinder and some emery tape, clean the casting slag off, polish the oil return paths and:
wash it
Wash It
WASH IT
Put the paint on the outside.

Well paint will hold any loose sand that maybe there, as long as the paint sticks. If you get it clean enough to get the paint to stick there shouldnt be any sand. Paint will let the oil flow better. Paint is also a good insulator and oil is used as a coolant as well as a lubricant

I used Sprayon S00609 green epoxy insulating varnish from Grainger. It has a class F rating and the shop I went to uses it so I figured it can't hurt.
Had the block tanked afterwards and 95% of it was still there. I cut slips of paper and set them inside each lifter bore and then tapped up the rest.
I bored out the oil return in the head where it's shared with a head bolt and run the fast return splash guards then smoothed out the rest of the oil return path in the head.
This might be overkill, but the paint was < $10 so I figure it's worth that much. This is the same paint they use inside electric motors to insulate from sparks and was selected because it doesn't react to the oil.

This may be to late but another good product to paint the lifter valley and the valve spring area of the heads is Red Glyptal. Red Gyyptal is also a oil proof coating used for insolating electric motors and is available through Eastwood Company (www.Eastwoodcompany.com). I brushed it on after the block was hot tanked, machined and wiped down with a good degreaser. It went on thick and dried fast. I think it's time and money well spent.
Although for my next engine rebuild I will try grinding off casting flash and cleaning up oil return passages before the block goes into the hot tank.
