What is the best oil additive for an older engine.

My 360 has about 100k miles on it. Is there any advantage to adding an oil additive? A couple of the lifters are getting a little noisy. I know that the compression is a low (below 100) on 2 of the cylinder. I want to get by for a couple of years yet before I rebuild it. It is only used occassionally and not very hard.

Thanks,
Bob

Valvoline Max life has a conditioner in it that keeps the seals soft and pliable in your motor so they don't crack and leak. As far as magic in the bottle goes synthetic oil is about as close as you are going to get but watch out for leaks because it will find its way past your seals were conventional oils won't. There is no real magic in a bottle. Taking good care of the motor from 0 - 100,000 is the about the best you can do.

What is the best oil additive for an older engine.

When I was in school in the Harley Davidson rebuild and performance class I asked my teacher that very question, He had been in the motorcycle and automotive field for 40 years, he taught both classes, auto and bike. He said the ONLY additive he believed in was Marvel Mystery Oil,added to gasoline though, it adds a little bit of lubricity to the top end, cylinder and valve guides. A few weeks later we built 2 bikes to test the theory, one using the additive, and one not. We then put them in the Dyno class and all of the students in that class used them for training aids for 6 weeks, each bike seeing 5 good hard redline Dyno pulls a day, very hard on them. we then took them and tore them down, the bike without the additive to its gas showed normal glazing in the cylinder and slight wear on the valve guides, the bike with the additive had not a single wear pattern to show it had even been ran, except for normal carbon buildup. I'll tell ya, I was sold!!!
Just my experiences

Stick with a good quality oil and that engine will last a long time.

I knew a guy who used it in his gas when he ran avgas because he said avgas didn't lubricate near as well as pump gas. I have found it to work to unstick lifters when put in the oil. I know it is a good product but the "snake oil" type name seems to turn other people I know away.

Rislone helps the rings and will pacify a tired motor.

Bob, I’ve had good luck using CD2 (the thick stuff) on high-mileage oil burning engines. One engine went from <500 to >1000 miles per quart with it. Also cut down on a lot of blow-by. It’s a band-aid though, you still need to fix what’s mechanically wrong. Are the two low-compression cylinders adjacent to each other? Maybe you have a blown head gasket.

Hi Barry,

No the two cylinders are on opposite sides. The truck uses no oil at all. I change it every 2000 miles and never add a drop. It is something we use around our place as a garbage hauler/tractor, etc. I 've had it about 3 years now and I don't think it was taken care of before I got it. I drained the tranny and tc this weekend and I don't think it has ever been changes, I was surprised that I didn't find any metal shavings either. It sure shifts a lot better now.
