For my F-250 390 rebuild I'm looking at either the Crane 272-2 or 278-2 cam (Also called Powermax H 278-2). I like a smooth idle, but would give up some smoothness for great horsepower at low and mid range. Any suggestions?

hey man i got a crower power beast in my 390 and man it woke that motor up. It has a healthy sounding idle not racey or nothen though. I would recommend this cam to anyone man. It comes in at around 2,000rpm but man does it pull. We pull a 12,000lb trailor all the time with it so it still has good low end. Like I said this a great cam man.

While were on this subject does anyone know about the edelbrock performer rpm (296/296 adv duration) or the torker (290/300 adv duration) cams ? i know you want more lift on the exh. side of the cam on FE's but I assume edelbrock designed the perf rpm to work with the perf rpm intake, I think I might go with the torker or the crane powermax h-296-2

Anyone think this would be a bad idea ?

The edelbrock Performer RPM Cam is labeled, "Not for heavy vehicles" on their web site. SO I did not go with that cam in My f250. It is a single pattern cam and several folks reccomended against it in a truck. I went with the Crower Power beast also. But mine seems a little weak on the bottom end. There is a noticeable bog, or weak spot just off idle up to about 1500 RPM. I may have to lean the primamry a little, I have not done the tuning as shown in the Edelbrock carb manual. It's a 750 CFM carb.

Correcting myself. The Ed web site labels their 302 Perf RPM cam as "not for heavy vehicles". I read the wrong paragraph. There is probably still some concern with that cam in a heavy vehicle, but that's just based on some opinions I recieved mostly from this site.

The torker cam you were looking at is for the 460. Edelbrock only makes two cams for the FE. One is the performer the other is the performer RPM. If the RPM cam had a little more duration on the exhaust and about a 112 LCA I would say go for it. It is definitely not a cam that will provide you with good low end torque for pulling. I think you would be happy with the crane 343801 cam. It will give almost as much peak power as the RPM cam but a lot more low end power and a lower RPM peak. I have heard great things about the crowers also. Overcamming is the best way to get a dissapointing rebuild.

hey man i got a holley 600cfm on my 390 with 68 primaries and 70 secondaries. We had to richen up the mixture on it too when we put the crower in. And we have a 50cc pump on the primaries too. It still has good take off and pulls a 12,000lb trailor around alot. But it does lag a little until around 2,000 then it really pulls hard.

Thanks you all. I'm leaning more and more to the crane 343801. It sounds like that is the best overall cam for decent performance over a larger range.
