How bad is the 4r70w

Is the 4r70w a pretty light trans? I just bought an '04 4.6 with this trans and was wondering if it would hold up pretty well. Also were there any changes to the 4.6 with the new body style? Thanks

4R70 tranny

I have 97,000 miles on mine with no problems. It had a bad 2-3 accumulator which was replaced under original warranty at about 20,000 miles, but otherwise, no problems at all.

I had this trans in my 96F150 and I traded it in with 156k on it, with no issues, just the occasional hard 1-2 upshift, but that was with me since around 80k or so.

It is the same trany as the aod. Over the years ford had made many changes. I have herd of drag racers running these behind 1000 hp engines.

The 4r75e used in these trucks can be built to take power. The supercharger in my truck ate up the stock tranny in 6 miles. Its now built to take 700HP.

thanks for the help. This is my first auto truck and it takes some getting used to. How would a tuner make it shift differently? Just firmer or at better times also?

my edge firms up the shifts quite a bit...you can choose the level of firmness.

does the edge seem to help the tranny know when to shift at better times? Also is there anything that just adjusts the tranny? I dont really need the rest of the tuner.
