Help: After Market Fan Clutch
Recently had to replace my original fan clutch as the bearing went out on it. Had an aftermaket clutch installed as they were approx. $200.00 cheaper. Problem is that the new clutch seems to be engaged almost all the time now. Where I live in Canada, the ambient temp is currently hovering around 50 degrees F. Yet when I initially leave the driveway in the morning, it is engaged until the truck gets warmed up. I was told that this was normal as the oil in the clutch drains into the working area when the unit is shut down. My concern is that once I leave the driveway, the clutch seems to be engaged until the unit is totaly warmed up and that usually requires me to get up to over 2000 rpm for an extended amount of time. Up here in Canada, some winter mornings can get to as low as -40 degrees F. How will the clutch ever disengage that that temp if it has to rely on the oil draining out of the working area. Also, even while normally driving around town with no load on the truck whatsoever, the clutch is constantly engaged even though my temp gauge runs right on the "O" in NORMAL. That doesn't seem right to me. Yet I was told that some aftermarket clutch fans are designed to engage at lower temperatures than the original equipment parts they replace. That may be necessary in Arizona, but up here in Canada, I think it's just a waste of horsepower and fuel economy. Does it sound like this clutch is working as it should or do I have a piece of crap on my hands? I'm able to spin it with my hand when the engine isn't running, however, there is so much tension that it won't free-wheel at all when I try to spin it. It just moves an inch or so. Does that sound right? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
