I replaced the points in my '74 360 with the Pertronix Ignitor and the 40,000 volt coil. Works beautifully so far. The only problem I ran into was with the resistance wire. The Ignitor requires 12v on start and run. On Start 12v is always supplied to the coil (brown wire from start solenoid), but on run there is a resistance wire in the circuit and the coil only sees 6-8 volts (or so). The resistance wires do go bad with age and the resistance increases with age. I was seeing a voltage lower than expected.

Since the Pertronix coil will work with or without the resistance wire, and the Ignitor must be supplied with 12v, I decided to bypass the resistance wire and attach the Ignitor module directly to the + and - terminals of the coil. If you use the stock coil (according to Pertronix instructions) then you must supply 12v to the module at start and at run.

The instructions were pretty good and will explain all this (probably better than I have). Good luck...

I have been running pertronics instead of points for five years no problems with the trigger unit. I have had two seperate pertronics coils go bad. Nothing at all wrong with the wiring(checked again and again),been running the nastiest coil in my garage for three years now without changing anything. The company wouldn't refund my money they say I have a wiring problem.
