Performance mainly. I'm still not sure I know what flutter sounds like.
If you have a regular y-pipe without the restrictions, leave it - you don't know what flutter is, and even if you have it, it's not bothering you, so leave it
Putting on the choked-down pipe isn't going to help anything.

I know this thread is not current, but I still want to ask - has anyone tried wrapping the Y pipe in that heat tape stuff that is used on racing exhaust systems, mostly headers, you know what I mean??? This might reduce the flutter sound and keep some heat in the pipe moving out the exhaust...
Installed the y-pipe on my '01 F-350 with 4.30's. Better all-around performance, and as for the flutter you all talk about, I can't hear it over my 4" MBRP exhaust!!!!

The flutter is in a very narrow range. I wouldn't let that stop anyone.
Thing is, nobody here has ever dyno'd it before and after. I can see why some folks would be hesitant to do the mod. The eBay seller makes some outlandish claims. I think just about anything would be "better" than the T-pipe contraption from what I understand about exhaust flow and design.
I didn't really care about performance gains or anything. I just didn't want such an ugly abomination on my truck.
Is there any good reason why I can't take the factory pipe to the local muffler shop and have them replace the restrictions with normal 2 1/2 inch pipe?
I know of no good reason why you can't but I also do not know of a good reason why you should.
You'll still have a T-pipe when you're done. If you want to do all that work of taking it off might as well take it off and take it, along with the Y-pipe of your choosing and have the local muffler shop weld it on.
For the price, you might be able to get a local muffler shop to weld their own Y into it for less than buying one from eBay and then getting it welded on.
For me, the y-pipe helped increase the throttle response at low RPMs. It didn't do one bloody thing for high-end power. Nor did it really do anything TOTAL for low-end torque, just made the torque come in faster with less go-pedal.
What DID help was my Volant CAI - but that's after the headers and the y-pipe.
YMMV.

WELL - Maybe my motive is different than most. I had my 3rd friend tell me that my truck sounds like a 6 cylinder or tuner car since I put on the Gibson single exhaust
I know the Gibson cat doesn't sound like this on any other vehicle I've ever heard and the goofy sound at lower rpm's has to be from the restrictors in the y pipe, and I wanna get rid of 'em PRONTO!

Guys, I have done this twice, both on 2000 yr F350's. 1st time, a shop made it up , 2nd time ebay pipe welded in. The ebay pipe looked nicer & fit great, same total cost. Both my trucks had a vibration/drone at 2100 rpm you could feel & hear that was corrected with the Y-pipe, & both trucks had the 1st style original y-pipe , like a Mcdonalds sign with almost 360 degrees of bends on the passenger side. The low end difference was very noticeable, on start-up, and off the line. I stayed with the factory exhaust as I did not want the "six" sound. I was very pleased with the outcome.
