6-71 blower on a stock 390???

Hi, I've come across a free 6-71 roots blower. My question is, the truck i'm about to buy is stock except for the long tube headers and I was curios if I could buy the proper manifold ,carb and air intake and put the blower on. The truck would be a Sunday driver, so it wouldn't get much use. I know little about blowers or turbos so I need expert advice. Will this thing work and if so, how much HP would I gain?

6-71 blower on a stock 390???

a 6 71 moves 420 cubes of air per revolution (7 psi gives a moderate air temp increase)

a 390 uses 390 cubes of air per 2 revolutions

so at 1:1 (max) you should pickup about 60-80 % torque/power

I figure the hw/engine mods/etc to fit a blower is about 10 times the fair prices of a blower.

no need for any internal engine mods (just bolt it on) unless you are blowing smoke and are going over 7 psi.

when it is finished you'll love
while you paying for it you question your sanity

nothing moves you like forced induction

6-71 blower on a stock 390???

GREAT! that's just what I wanted to hear. I was thinkng the other day about how i'm going to make power with this thing because i'm on a limited budget. Then I remembered the blower.

>when it is finished you'll love
>while you paying for it you question your sanity

I'm getting the blower free, and rebuilt very inexpensively by a pro.(very good friend of my dad's) hehehehehe. It's off one of my dad's 6-71's. The engine was just sitting there so i asked "can I have that" and he said sure. So, I must need a differant intake manifold. Where to get that cheap? What kind of carb should I use? I already have the air intake picked out. Also, where do I get the pulleys and belts? Anything else I'll need? thank you so much.

6-71 blower on a stock 390???

So where some of the intent of my message has been missed.

The
manifold
drive pulleys
drive belts
dizzy setup
water pump setup
carbs (2 * 600 Vac is close to OK)
fuel system

is going to be a LOT of money
($US I'd guess $4000, a rebuilt 6L71 blower is only worth $400)

oooohhhhhhhhhhh okay. So that's where all the cost is involved when you buy a blower. I thought they were just ripping their customers off. Well I dont have that kind of money so I guess i'm not putting the blower on then.:-( Well I guess i'll just put on the 4 barrel and call it good fer now. Thanks for your help!

You can make a lot of power from that 390 without a lot of money. More power than you'll ever be able to get to the ground, anyway. You already have the headers. Put electronic ignition on it (Pertronix kit -- under $100 even with a new coil), a 4v intake (cast iron ones work fine and are a dime a dozen), and a decent carb ($300 with all the accessories). Next, replace that stock cam with a good aftermarket one (lifters, too, of course). A decent cam and lifters will be less than $200, but figure $300 to cover a roller timing set and other miscellaneous items while you're at it. Finally, the next time you have to pull the heads, have CJ size valves installed and the heads port-matched. All told, you'll be at around a thousand bucks or so, but you'll be well over 300 ponies and have enough twist to melt your tires at will.

The differances are it's got a 428!!!! and msn ignition, a four barrel, and needs not body work and has all the chrome. It's still got headers and true duals too!! I am so happy i cannnot contain myself!!!!! i'm going to look at it on saturday!!!!!! wooooohooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Do yourself a BIG favor and latch onto that blower anyway. You may not need it now and it may just go into the closet, but you may want it someday and then you'll kick yourself and say "D'OH! Why didn't I KEEP that???!!!"

6-71 blower on a stock 390???

We've got 3 or 4 laying around. My dad will never get rid of them he's one of those collector types who doesn't throw good stuff away. Plus, he can't move it without me, so if it ever comes to that I'll pick it up.

6-71 blower on a stock 390???

Thanks for the offer but it's not really something you can sell. Kind of like your grandma giving you a Christmas present and you selling it. Besides, I'm pulling them off of working engines that ajust aren't being used. I would like to help you out. You know now that I think about it, a very good friend of my dad's and mine rebuilds these blowers and turbos for living. He may have some I could buy on the cheap. I'll ask the next time I see my dad.
