shifter fork

My brothers f 150 with the m5od was haveing trouble shifting into 5th and reverse. I replaced the bushings at the shifter stub. The problem is still there. I then bought the shifter fork for reverse and 5th gear. When i went to replace them I discovered that there is a shifter fork that isnt accessable from the top cover. I need to know how to access the other shifter fork and is it something I can do or do I need to get a professional to take care of it? Is there any tricks to doing this job? Do I need to drop the tranny? All help is greatly appreciated.
