What a bunch of whiners. Tell me which other industry will pay high-school grads $70k to fasten stuff together? This is such a cush job that anywhere else people would be beating on the gates to get in, not out. Poor working man my eye.

If Ford and Chrysler had any sense they would lockout the UAW in solidarity. If the membership really has the itch to strike, they should walk out on the union leadership. Oh the irony times 2!

Healthcare is the sticking point this time, not the usual wages/job security issues.

healthcare in this country for what we have to pay is rediculous,

i cant see doctors and prescription drug companies taking pay cuts anytime soon, why should we have to settle for less coverage and pay more every few years

You no readeee linkeee. do you?

""This strike is not about the VEBA (health benefits) in any way shape or form," Gettelfinger said at an afternoon news conference in Detroit.

"The No. 1 issue here is job security," Gettelfinger later said, adding that the union also was fighting to preserve workers' benefits."

Seeing that I have not singled anyone out with the UAW strike, it would not be a personal attack. thus, legal...... please stop trying to start a fight in here....

I am in nop way trying to start a fight in here. Just seems to be a lot of post bashing unions and their members, then when someone mentions this or opposes this they get censored.

It is obvious a lot of these people are as lost as last years easter eggs on the contract provisions of the UAW.

I think striking for job security might backfire. I can easily see where GM, Ford and Chrysler could speed up plant openings in other countries if they see the UAW trying to limit their options as to where they can assemble their products.

Even if they have a long strike and win their fight for job security, it may only be a partial victory. If GM loses market share to import brands, some people will return to their jobs with job security and others will have no job at all.

Job security is a thing of the past. When I finished college and took the job I retired from, one reason I took the job was because they had never laid off or fired anyone who did their job and never stole from the company. By the time I retired 31 years later, the same company that assured me I would always have a job if I worked hard and was honest were layin off people, eliminating jobs and making life miserable for people I worked with under the same impression but who had not prepared for early retirement.

I'm sure the people who assembled my truck in Norfolk, VA in late 2003 thought they had job security and now the plant is closed for good.

What isn't lost on me is that the members have a deal that is too good to be true and they know - evidenced by their defensive attitudes - that they can't get the same agreement on the open market. Give me JUST ONE example of another industry where I could start at 60K/year with just a GED.

What isn't lost on me is that the leadership has this cushy position that lets them live a fat and sassy life paid for by the members dues. They pretend to be a mouthpiece for the poor working man but wouldn't know how to live like one.

I wouldn't even care except that I would like to see the domestic car companies, workers included, go on to live happy lives building the cars I like to drive. It would also be nice if one of the last remaining American industries isn't greeded straight over the boarder from every participant.
