Installing a Electric Brake Control Activator

Wow! what a great site, you guys do a great job. I'm looking for information about installing a electric brake control activator in my 1997 F150, 4.6L, with the off road package. Just wondering if I might have a spot under the dash to plug this in or will it require me splicing into the wiring? Any information on installing this would be appreciated. Kevin

On my 99 it had a harness that I just simply plugged into but my truck has the towing package if yours doesn't you will probably have to cut and splice.

Welcome to the forums

Look above your right knee under the dash. There should be a female plug there with either 6 or 8 terminals pointing straight down. Get the plug-in harness and you are ready to go as long as your truck has the 7 pin plug on the back. The harness is available wherever brake controllers are sold.

you should have the pin connector under the dash, but you wont have the 7 pin rear plug setup if you dont have the towing package. if you drop the spare tire and look at the plug on the lelft frame rail you will see it has a dozen wires into it, and only 4-5 out. the others are the trailer wires. you can buy the harnes to the back end and replace as it is "the towing kit", or you can splice in yourself.

Thanks for the responses. Indeed, I do have a plug under the dash by my right knee however, it's only a five prong. At the rear of the truck along the frame there are two wire (orange & blue) that aren't pluggeg into anything. I haven't traced these wires to the front but they don't go into the plug by my right knee. Going into the plug under the dash the colors are red, white, blue, black & green. I recently changed my 4 blade trailer plug at the rear to be a 7 blade. Once I either find the wires or run some from the front I can wire them in to the receptacle. Any additional info would be appreciated. Thanks

The connector under the dash that you described with wire colors is where a brake controller is connected. The wire functions are as follows.

LG Trailer tow, stop lamps
R Trailer tow, battery power
DB Trailer tow, trailer electronic brake control module
WH Trailer tow, ground
BN Trailer tow, illumination (tail lights)

Good luck!

i would lhave to check, but i think the red or orange wire at the back is always hot, and the blue wire might be the brake apply wire. both for the 7 pin connector.

One goes to back-up lights and one is hot with the Key on only.

O.k., definately making some progress on this project. I went down to the local trailer supply and picked up a control module and wire harness to plug into the factory plug. However, I don't seem to have any power to the unit. When the truck is running I have 14V on the red wire and 14V on the orange at the back of the truck. Possibly I might have a wire in the wrong spot on the trailer or truck end. Would anyone have the color code and numbering for the female and male ends of a 7 pin plug. Also, is the black wire from the trailer brakes the positive and the white the ground. Thanks

Hope you bought the Prodigy. It's the best one out there.
