The Powerstroke is an all electronically controlled engine...electro-hydraulically fired injectors, Turbocharged, Direct injection, no throttle cable all electronic, and alot more power and torque. The IDI is all mechanical, uses a rotary injection pump with mechanical injectors, has cable throttle pedal, automatic but mechanical high idle and timing advance, only computer would be for the E4OD auto transmission, much less power. All non-turbo until 1993.5 then a turbo model was available with 4 more horses.
Powerstroke: Direct Injection- Injects the fuel directly into the top of the cylinder.
Stock HP/TQ: 215-225HP/ 410-480ft-lbs
Ford IDI Diesel: Indirect Injection- Injects the fuel into a pre-combustion chamber(pre-cup), that is where the fuel is ignited. It doesnt ignite directly on top of the piston like a powersroke.
Stock HP/TQ: 186-190HP/ 333-350ft-lbs

That's a pict of my old IDI truck in my signature. I loved that old girl. Worked hard, didn't complain...much. Lasted about ~380K before the body started to rust off the frame. Sold it to a neighbor....he's still driving it with almost 500K on the odometer. It was totally gutless compared to the PSD's. Getting on the e-way with the boat in tow was always exciting. Another 1-2 miles down the road to get up to 65MPH.
