I really do not have a problem with the 5 row transmission cooler if that is what the manufacturer feels is adequate ................. but, my question is why do they keep changing things????? It is confusing!
According to this thread, it appears the cooler began as an 11 row, then 7 row and now a 5 row. Unless I have missed something, the standard cooler WITHOUT the heavy duty towing package was always a 5 row and continues to be a 5 row. Go figure!
The rows don't count, only the overall size. I'm pretty sure the transmission radiator with the HD towing package is much longer than the standard. . Another member here had the HD tow package retrofitted by his dealer and his replacement transmission radiator looks like this too.
This should be seven rows. My '07 XLT with HD Tow. If your 5 row is longer it'll have more area.
Disregard my message $30 (page 2). I've confused the 7 and 11 row transmission coolers. My HD towing package has 7 rows as can be seen in the photo above. Sorry for misleading anyone!
In my research and studies on this subject...it's the finned areas that count...in the picture above by Chuck...it has 7 finned areas...which is HD tow package. The other expeditions without it have 5 finned areas. That's how you can tell.

myexpo2,
What you have stated may have been true in the past .......... but, not currently. In one of my earlier post, I stated the following:
I have a late model 2008 Expedition - Built in June 2008
I came across this thread and have an update for those concerned. My Expedition has the 536 heavy duty towing package, but the transmission cooler is the 5 row ........ not 7 row.
I went back to the dealership and checked two other Expeditions with the heavy duty towing package, as well as two navigators and they all have the 5 row transmission cooler also.
I am assumiming Ford did not see the need for the larger 7 row unit???????
The 5 finned row cooler measures approximaterl 21 inches wide. This is about the exact same width as those mentioned in much earlier post. I guess I am OK with the smaller cooler, if that is what Ford is currently providing with the newer built models. I am still puzzled as to why the continually change things. If an 11 or 7 finned row cooler was the "standard" not so long ago, what has changed?
Since I have personally seen 4 other recently built Expo's and Navigators with the exact same cooler as mine AND they also came equipped with the 536 heavy duty towing package option, it must be correct. But, why does Ford continually make these changes which can obviously confuse an individual????

Are they charging for it...$395? the 536 package and still giving you a 5 row instead of a 7 row?....I would like to see a pic of your cooler...if you wouldn't mine.

In looking at the plastic bracket, there's plenty of room for a 9 or maybe even an 11 row cooler. Anyone know if this width of cooler is used on any other ford appications? I live where it often gets above, 110°F and when towing I'd like an even larger cooler with the factory fit. Notice on the left side of the cooler pic (vehicle right) it looks like there's room for another cooler.... perhaps an optional power steering fluid cooler? When the new F150's are out, it will be interresting to see if they use this same radiator hardware and cooler setup. I'd like to read the power steering fluid to see how hot it gets. Some vehicle models use a PS cooler for 4wd, by not on 2wd. Sometimes is just a finless tubing loop in front of the radiator.
I think I would be going to see my dealer if I paid for a HD tow package (536) for $395 and didn't get the 7 row cooler....and I would ask why? and when are you going to put my 7 row on?

Well I went to the dealer this morning to get my fog lights replaced....and I looked at the new Expedition LE Limited that just rolled off the truck and it had the HD tow package and a 5 row cooler....how sad that people are paying for a package ($395) and getting less cooler.....I am glad I have the 7 row....but I would not be happy with a 5 row for that price.....but just as TVL stated is correct...and they have down sized the package.

Reason: spelling
As much as I'd like an even larger cooler, if Ford now considers 5 rows good enough for heavy duty, then I'm real happy that I've got the now unavailable 7 row cooler.
I've towed in the worse conditions (heaviset load, heat, and climb) I ever will, and the tranny only got to 220°F for about 10 minutes, and then cooled down quickly. That's only about 110°F above ambient... not too bad considering how hard the engine and tranny are working.
If the cooler will work and keep the tranny cool while towing, why does it matter if it's 20 rows or 2?
I guess it really does not matter...but if I am paying for a package...I would expect the goods. I just think that more area for cooling is better....thats just me. I am sure it will be fine...and they are way better coolers than the older expeditions had.

What exactly do you get with the tow package? Tranny cooler and hitch and wiring, right?

Non HD tow package:
4pin connector
Hitch 2" Class III or better....most likely a class IV.
5 row cooler (standard on all Expedition)
HD flasher
HD tow package (536)
4pin and 7 pin connector
Hitch 2" Class IV...... on mine
7 row cooler...now 5 row cooler of the non HD package...this I verified this morning...
brake controller wiring kit
HD flasher
Radiator Upgrade
There is no 2008 guide out yet...I would like to see a new guide and see if it has changed.
