time for 68 engine swap.

after 39 years...
eb has 289.
have a r.built fresh 302 bought couple of years ago.
"think" out of a mustang. but cant tell.
know it will bolt up...but..concerned about balancing.
289 is bolted to 3 speed standard and want to keep it.

so.
how do i tell what balancing issues i might have...

Ford changed the crank "im-balance" from 28 oz to 50 oz. Which makes the flywheel/flexplate and harmonic damper crank-specific. You can't use your original balancer or flywheel with a late-model crank. I think 86 and up 302 used the 50oz and 85 and down used the 28oz. So I guess it just depends on what year motor you have. Other than that I don't see too many problems using your original 3speed. I would buy a good name brand clutch and bolt her all up.

the new engine has a flex plate.
it is also "not" fuel injected.
guessing that since the guy i bought it from had plenty of 71-72 mustangs laying around his back yard....just guessing...was for one of those..

was part of a "package" deal. buy his 72 bronc get the other engine...
72 was toooo rough but kept the engine.

I have an 83 out of a mustang and it is 50oz ballance. i think this is first year of 50 oz.
Look above the starter to find casting number and year made.
Number should look like this 7A12 (7 is year- A is Jan.-12 is the day, Jan 12 1967)
If it was a 77 engine i think it would have a one piece rear main seal.
If it was 87 it would be fuel injected. Hope this helps

The date code should be just above the numbers on the block.
Did you find these above the starter?
Another place to look for a date code is on the top front of the block right where the timing chain cover meets the block on driver side, there is a flat spot right over the water port, if the block has never been decked.
I will try to find a pic.

You may not have a 302, how many valve cover bolts do you have?
Does the fuel pump mount with the bolts top and bottom or left to right?
