Winterize 6.0

I live in a very cold climate. Temperatures will reach 50 below this winter. I keep my F250 in a heated garage. It came to me used and is not winterized. Are there block heaters already installed on the engine?

I plan to install oil pan heater and auto trans pan heater.

What oil is good for engine in winter?

Does Ford ok synthetic trans oil?

Thanks.

Yes all 6.0 have the engine block heater installed at the factory, but not all trucks have the electrical cord plug installed (it depends what state the truck was originally shipped to).

Here is the link from the 6.0 tech folder to the cord routing (Cord part number at International: Z3500043) if you need to add it.
http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-05-20.php

For cold climates 5W-40 synthetic is the oil of choice, any brand that is at least API CI-4+ rated.

The Torqueshift transmission only uses Mercon SP fluid available from Ford or one of its parts distributors. The Mercon SP is a synthetic fluid.

I would also suggest synthetic fluid in the front axle (rear has it from factory) and transfer case.

Here is a thread from the 6.0 tech folder on winterizing
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/24...d-climate.html

You may want to also install a cold blanket front on the grill to control air flow through the radiator.

There have been others that suggest to much ideling on this engine is harmful to the EGR system(cause coking to the valve). The only other suggestion I could make is using a good fuel conditioner with antigel in every tank.

Goodluck with the new truck

blackhat hit most of the major issues, and his advice is good to take.
you may also want to consider the high idle mod as i'm sure you will want to idle your truck for longer periods of time than the factory recomends.

Your profile says you are in Alaska, so unless you bought his truck from another state it should already have the block heater cord installed. Look around behind the bumper on the passenger side by the tow hook and make sure you don't already have it.

Otherwise the guys have you covered pretty well.

I would also get something to inslulate the fuel filter unit under the drivers seat on the frame rail, Ive heard thats the cause of alot of gell-ups on the 6.0s.

In northern Canada we run 0w30 or 0w40 for the real extreme temps. Both are available in a CI-4 up here. The 0w30 from Ford and the 0w40 from Esso (Exxon) in their XD-3 line. If you can get some where you are, the XD-3 0w40 is a PAO4 Synthetic.
