Which is the best RV cam for the 390

I took the opportunity to check the lobe velocity on both the Power Beast and the 343901 cams. Here is the results.

Power Beast
Lobe Velocity=78

343901
Lobe Velocity=56

Now keep in mind that the lower number will offer better cylinder filling as the valve does open quicker. If you are after low end torque stick with the lower lobe velocity numbers.

Camshaft selection is not a easy process. There are many good cams out there and you just have to find one that will work with your application.

Happy Shopping!

Which is the best RV cam for the 390

Thanks for all of the good information, I'm getting an education here. To answer a few questions from above: I'm running 255/75r16 tires, well within the power band for 4.10 gears. The 750 Carb was part of the Ed package that included their heads (I sent back for heli-coil problems) and their single pattern cam (I sent back as suggested from folks on this forum, and purchased the Crower, also suggested by folks on this forum at that time). I know that my cylinders were bored over 20 at the last rebuils as indicated by the markings on top of the pistons. They have an indention, so they are probably closer to stock compression. If I pull the heads anytime soon I'll get some pics for you guys to analize. I may break down and do the Ed heads to see if that's holding back the horses.

This thing should be a tire smoker at this point, but is not. So I may have other problems, tuning issues before I realize the full potential of the cam. I'm new to engine tuning, so I'm not sure where my problem is, assuming there is one. The truck runs reasonably well, just faster than my buddies 3/4 ton Cheby with EFI 454. So, I assume nothing is way off the mark. But the lower RPM power seems a bit weak. I originally expected there to be plenty of grunt, even with the high RPM setup since I'm running 4.10 gears, an FE and a C6.

I sure wish one of you FE gurus was in central Texas.

You may want to start a new post rather than dragging this one out after 10 1/2 years of being dormant (June 2002). Things have changed and vendors have come and gone (Crane unfortunately).
