Yep, the 12V batt. will cause you a lot of problems other than your starter. Back in the early fifties, a lot of people with the early GM ohv engines would swap to an 8v batt. to help with starting. Lights would be really bright and sometimes the guages were not accurate but seemed to work out OK. I have not heard of an 8v battery in years so I don't know if they are still available.
That's true, ToneyGray, If I have my facts correct, with the 8V battery, all you have to do is change the battery. The 6v generator would keep it charged sufficiently to help with starting. There may have been some mods to the charging system but if so I am not aware of them. Been a long time!!
well everyone thank you big time. we now have another flathead v8 come back from the dead. the problem was the points. i had fire at the points with a screw driver but the points them self did not fire. new points and rumbled from the dead.
