I've been reading for hours about exhaust systems but still need advise.
My truck is a 1964 f-250 with a stock 292 (two barrel, for now). I have some Reds Headers shorties on order. From there back I don't know if it's best to do a single or dual system. Some say a small stock v-8 doesn't need dual exaust. Also, What size pipes, I'm thinking 2" or 2 1/4". For sound I want a mellow , low reasonance, but throaty sound upon accelaration. For mufflers I'm interested flowmaster hushpower II's, dynomax turbos, or even a mellowtone glasspack. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I suggest that you use a crossover and that the mufflers are mis-matched to prevent droning. Don't go over 2" in diameter, like Mike says, 1 7/8" might be better.
Good advise, When you say miss-matching, do you mean two different models of mufflers, or same mufflers but different size. And by crossover, you mean an H-pipe somewhere behind the headers?
I learned about the different muffler thing after I bought my 86 Mustang GT. This car came from the factory with different sized mufflers to prevent droning.
And by different size mufflers, you mean longer in lenth? or larger inside diameter?
Let's use an example and say I go with 1 7/8 pipe. Then what would you recommend for size mufflers.
Different sized cases, like a 22" on one side and a 24" on the other size. As long as you have an H-pipe, I don't think the slight flow difference matters - the H-pipe will equalize it.
The different size mufflers, 22 in. vs. 24 in., makes some empirical sense to me. I have no way of figuring it out mathematically. However, if it also requires an H pipe, I wouldnt mess with it.
My two Cherry bombs without H hum, and it has become kind of nice. Drowns out the electric fuel pump, but isnt good for stereos or conversation.

I had dual exhaust on my 57 Ford Fairlane when I was a kid and I don't remember anything strange about the exhaust note.....I also did not have a cross-over either.
I'm not planning to use glass packs or any other sort of loud muffler on mine. I have a regular 6in dia x 30" (I think) muffler and I was just going to get another identical muffler for it.
What are you guys talking about?

It's the sound dual exhaust sometimes makes a certain RPM, when they hit a certain harmonic and it's really loud inside the cab.
My brother had dual 40 flowmasters and at 1800 rpm it was horrible. So I'm trying to avoid this. Needless to say I'll start by NOT getting flowmasters 40's. -But I am interested in their Hushpower II's. But they're $129 each! Not sure if they're worth it.
Someday Rick maybe you will have a chance to ride in mine. But if so, talk loud ha ha.

No. I haven't heard from them yet. They told me to expect a call sometime this week.
On the way up there I'm going to drop by "High Strength Bolt" in Kent, Wa and get the studs. I also want to use brass exhaust manifold nuts on the bolts to hold it all together.
When I get them I'll take some high res pictures and post them in the gallery.
I'm also thinking I'll stop by Specialty Metals and get myself a piece of 3/8 aluminum so I can make myself a valley cover. I like the idea of using a router to make a "lip" to fit in the valley.
Then I'll probably use a drill and dowel to put swirls or something on it.
I can make a tube and weld it on for an oil fill and another for a breather/ oil seperator.
