Ignition problems
Hey, my ignition system seems to have a problem with no spark getting to the plugs, because timing light shows nothing and it isn't firing. I replaced the points and condensor, and it has brand new plugs. The wires seem to be ok and all connect well. I noticed that after trying to crank it the ignition coil was really hot, and that was just after trying to crank it not running or driving it. It's just a stock type coil and i believe this is the third this truck's gone through. Should i check the voltage regulator? I'm eventually going to upgrade to the pertronix ingnitor 1/2. This will be a relatively stock motor until i rebuild it, and will never turn more then 4500-5000rpm since it's a street only truck. So which ignitor do i need, and does the extra 5000 volts with the ignitor 2 make that much difference? Should i go ahead and upgrade my ignition or wait till it's running again? What does my problem sound like coil? voltage regulator?
Thanks
Nate

Ignition problems
Nate, It sounds like you have switched the wires in the coil. Be very careful this situation can cause the coil to explode and start a fire. Very hot coils are dangerous. The negative wire on the coil should connect to the distributor the positive wire is the power supply (12 volts starting and about 6 to run). With the distributor cap off, crank the engine to see if the rotor is turning. With the cap off and the switch on measure the voltage at the contact points. Double check the firing order to see if the plug wires are correctly installed. Take out a plug and smell it to see if you are getting fuel. Post back!
