Guess I'll have to look it up in my Haynes book tonight.

Wow,
Thanks for all of your help, Silversport it looks like you were right. I went to AutoShack this evening and they confirmed I needed a special wrench set. The clutch is screw on. One really large wrench that holds the pulley by the four bolts and one smaller wrench that loosens the clutch from the shaft. I will try it tomorrow. I see you have a truck almost like mine, 1989 4.9L 4WD SWB with manual 5spd. What kind of gas milage do you get? I only get 13 mpg. Is that all I should expect. Once again, thanks to all, Bill

Last few tanks have been a little lower .... I think my O2 Sensor is going out, had a Check Engine after I hit a puddle the other day ... it went away. Usually I was getting 16MPG ... but now the A/C is on High all the time so about 14MPG, but that is all city, and I have been pushing it a little more, I miss my fast spooling VW that I have torn apart in the garage for a TBelt change.

I don't recall which way you need to turn that nut, I can't remember if it is reverse thread or not. My water pump started leaking about a month after I got the truck, and it had what looked like a Chevy radiator in it, so I changed it all .... but that clutch was taken to a shop on the pump for an air chisel to remove it after many skinned knuckles with the wrech that the parts places sell. Funny that wrench worked great on my neighbors 98 V8 F150. So if you can't break it loose, consider pulling the radiator to get the shroud in there, either way, the cardboard is a great Idea.

righty tighty, lefty-loosy.

the wrenches bend after use.

that is why some work better.

use two strap wrenches.

Angry Got Fan Clutch off Tonight. Hit a snag.....

Thanks to all for the good advice. The special wrenches from parts store worked. I ordered a new fan shroud from ebay. Said it was the right one for my truck. Problem is its about 2.5 inches too thick to slide in between front of engine and rear or radiator. When I replaced radiator I purchased heavy duty model from autozone. Could the heavy duty model be thicker and knock me out of using a shroud? Anyone have a 4.9 with a fan shroud they wouldnt mind measuring the thickness. Thanks for all your trouble.

Mine is 2 5/8" at the top .... bottom looks the same but didn't get down there. My 2 Row HD radiator core is 2.5" and all the specs I have seen on the 1 row are 1.25" for the core ..... I've looks since the clutch hit the radiator about 2 months after installing it and I couldn't find a shorter clutch for the 4.9L either to give more than the 3/4" space between the radiator and the thermo spring on the clutch. I have not seen any 3 row's for the 4.9L F150.

From what I have seen, generally, the difference is in the core, not the tanks. If the radiator, fan, and clutch all fit now, then I'd say it's good. If you find that the shroud is too deep, you can always cut enough off to clear the belts and such.

my radiator, the core aluminum, is 2" wide and the shroud is 3.5" wide.

94 f150 with 4.9 auto/air.

hope this helps.

A forgot to remind .... My truck had what looked like a non ford radiator in it .... filler was leaning back, but all other demensions fit fine ... but since I know that was not stock ... I can't say if the shroud is stock also. Hopefully someone else with a 87-91 4.9L can chime in with theirs. BTW, mine has Air Conditioning and the radiator I have in there has the hookup for tranny cooling lines, but I have an M5OD tranny.

Hi,
I had a little free time this afternoon and got the fan shroud out to measure. Looks like they must have sent me the wrong one although they still say it should fit. It measures between 5" and 5 1/2" thick no matter where you lay the measuring tape. It only cost $7.99 but it cost $15.99 shipping to get it here from CA. I should have gone to the dealer to start with but just dont like paying retail on parts. I think I will put the fan clutch back on tomorrow so I can have my truck back. Anyone know a mail order parts company that knows enough to send the correct part. Thanks again for taking time to read posts and answer them. You guys were great!
Bill

Go to car-part.com. It is an online used parts site, linked to used part yards nationwide .... except in southern louisiana and mississippi since the storm took out most of our yards. They charge a little more than a upullit yard, but you may find a yard close to you with one, that you can pick the part up and save shipping. The one you got may be for a V8 ... they are much shorter engines and would use a longer shroud.
