For 1, a foot brake test is false, the converter pumps up with fluid. A true stall test is done from an idle, then punch it. Even the big name builders will tell you this, B&M, TCI, ETC.
The one in my 63 F100 is the original 1984 converter that came with the engine and C6 from a 84 F250 with 29K on it. It stalls around 1200. It's too tight for my liking and I will soon be adding a B&M Holeshot. The truck is light with 3.50 gears. I will also be adding a CompCams 270H in the future after the bodywork is finally done and painted.

Two different animals here, Your truck lx is a 2wd street truck correct so it has different needs and this is not helping the O.P. Determining stall speed the most accurate way is with a trans brake!!(all the big name builders state this pretty clearly) But you don't need one in a 4wd so installing one for this is a waste of money. Holding the brake with the left foot and putting the truck in 1 and stabbing the gas for 2-3 seconds or until the brakes are overcome, Will get a very good reading.(do not repeat too much one run is all that is needed) Flash stall is the method you described and it is a helpful thing too, But the performance we want to measure is with a high wheel load!! Now on your 63 the motor and t.c. and trans came from a f250 so they set that up to handle the gvwr of the F-250! As you know in a lighter truck it will stall too soon! You will benefit from a higher stall rating but that is a different thread. For Off road andy you will want to get about 500 to 1000 rpm below the peak TORQUE rating of your motor! By the way in any high performance or towing or off road use with an auto tranny a trans temp gauge will save lots of money in the long term, I recommend a digital one you should see them numbers climb while sitting at a light or in the drive thru!!! Keeping a log of the numbers in relation to ambient temp and style of driving(slow off road, highway, etc.) with a note on age of the fluid, time running and the temps average. You will able to tell when something is amiss and when to change the fluid! I know it is a little overboard!!(OCD) But with the price of a transmission fix and the down time, The five minutes to write down the numbers can payoff!! Lxman please explain this? For 1, a foot brake test is false, the converter pumps up with fluid.

A torque peak at 4000rpm!!! Yeah if it is a 6cylinder!!!!! Your'e looking around 2400 rpm or so for peak torque and 3500 rpm for peak hp for a 351!! Stop with the disinformation!!!! If you drive a off road vehicle at 4000 rpm it better be built up or you are just beating on it needlessly!! High rpms only get you in trouble!!!

WTF sorry about the 4000 rpm's... I been building 302 too long and most of them peak out at around 4000.........Plus I was trying to slam you.

Look I'm not here to mess with you I give info on what I know and what I have done. I'm by no means a book boy or and internet Gear head that repeats what someone else said. I've been ripping skin off my knuckles for more than 30 years.

I have changed and swaped more motors into different truck cars vans then I care to remember DON'T YOU EVER CALL ME I LIAR....that converter that andy is going to use should only stall maybe 100 rpm's more. Get over it.....

and by what you just said he should be fine ...don't tell me that 302 converter is going to stall over 2000....

No way .........

A true mechanic should be judged on how few motors, trans, components he has to SWAP to make a truck stay running!!!!! There is a lot of disinformation regarding TC's and I am only trying to help this guy decide on a good match so he doesn't end up swapping again! A TC is a cheap quick upgrade if the one you have is not matched to the motor and your driving style! I am only here to help someone get the most from their ride if it takes money or knowledge, I am offering him solutions! And I am illiterute and I only have 28.8 inturnut cunuction!! So I can't be one of them high steppin, internet gear head, parrot talking, clean tool having fool!!! And OHH YEAH buy Mechanics wear gloves if you have to say something about scraping knuckles, you ain't no mechanic!!! That is a fact of life! Your scars don't prove a thing except you didn't think before you stripped that bolt head that led to your precious knuckle smashing the radiator!! What do you find so horrible about what I have told this man? What is the real problem that I didn't say yeah run it and have problems down the road so I can pretend to profess I know so much more than you And then tell him YEP your trans fried time for a new one!!! When proper component selection will lead to a bulletproof ride(NO swapping motors or trans or anything) From day one!! I don't get it you need a better hobby instead of being an internet mechanic cause you ain't really helping if your fighting me over this crap when I have not said anything that is wrong!! You definately have too much time on your hands!!!!
