Just curious why you are so against automatic? I thought it was the way of future....
A bunch of reasons.
Fuel economy, reliability, etc.
The main reason is hard to describe, but mostly it's the fact that an automatic is reactive, so in most situations, it's going to lag your intentions, or misconstrue them entirely.
I could go into more detail, but I hope you get the idea.

manual transmisssions are better at controling rpm's work better in some situations like towing..
Towing? most of automatic rated higher in weight to tow, why is that? It is easy also for auto matic to pull boat out of ramp, but for experienced driver it means nothing....well, most of new trucks barely make any manual you know it. I try to get a 5.4 v8 from ford in F 150 with sticks, NONE. You have to step up to F 250, and now the new Tundra don't even know what is sticks in their entire line up of Tundra model!

Probably the same reason they stopped putting manuals behind 351's in the 80's, the rest of the drive line couldn't handle the torque delivered by an idiot who couldn't handle a clutch. The soft delivery of an automatic slush box eases up the load. Of course if you know how to drive this won't be an issue for you, unfortunately Ford has to give the same warranty to the people who can't drive that they give the ones who can. Personally I have been giving the Dodges a look as they are the only ones willing to let me order a truck close to what I want.
how about a seven speed like a lot of the higher end car's have ?? with a mode selector, economy, performance, & tow-hall mode's and also a manual six speed. add big horse power number's ..and ford would be the only truck the average american would buy...
Anything beyond a 6 speed is pretty much there purely for marketing purposes.
Anyways - my kinda auto is a big block with a stick shift stuck in 3rd
Because a stick is funner to drive and I like knowing that if I want to shift down to 3rd to pass some one (or play with the chevy beside me) that I can.
Most sticks get better fuel millage also because you can control the shift points.
i sure hope they have enough balls to put a stick behind the new 5.4 or whicheever big v8 they decide to use. i love controlling what gear i am in and when.
That would be awesome if they did put a 6 speed manual behind the 5.4. I would definatley trade mine in to get one. I had to go with the 4.2 to get a manual.
The Explorers, I believe just the 4.6L models starting in the '08 model, now have the 6spd trans. Saw it in a magazine Ford sent me a month or two back.
I agree, a 5 spd manual would be nice behind then 5.4L. I prefer a stick, but needng a Screw and wanting the 5.4L, I had to opt for the Auto.
Part of the reason Autos are less fuel efficient is due to their constant nature of pulling/pushing. A stick can be easily thrown into neutral at a stop light or in stop & go traffic, where as an auto will constantly try to turn while you have the brake on.
Plus the fact sticks are more fun and you seem to have better control of the vehicle being able to gauge your own shift points.

Surely they'll still put a 5 speed with the 4.2 liter at least, but I agree, put a manual behind the v-8's. I wish I had a ZF to replace my c6, but for an auto with 240,000 miles, its good enough for now.

Stick is the way to go and I have owned both on the same engine which is a 300. 4.9 Not the same truck mind you but both are reg cab 150s with 2wd. I don't go for fancy although the stick definitely spits more torque thru to the wheels than the E40d did. Ford please return us our stick!!!
