A cummins engine is so overbuilt compared to a duramax or psd from day one. How many guys are pushing over 1000 hp with their truck? Quite a few dodges, a small number of Duramax's, any PSD's???
Now how many of them have a stock bottom end? Only the cummins...
It is much cheaper to make big hp with a cummins compared to the others due to not having to change the head, block, crank, rods, pistons, etc. Much more space to work on the darn thing, easy to plumb twins, swap turbo's, etc. You can swap a turbo in an hour and swap injectors in about 2 hours. It looks to me like you have to lift the body up on a F series just to change a turbo...
As far as the truck itself goes, I think Ford wins there. Duramax may have the nicest ride, but they also have IFS which can present problems.
The best of both worlds would be to put a cummins into a Ford. Here's what I'm doing...

Its not finished yet, that was an estimated 1400hp. They need to find away to get about uhh, 500-600 more hp worth of fuel out of the powerstroke injectors..... its gonna be tough. Im not saying that it cant be done, but they got thier work cut out for htem. WOP is definatly going to haul azz no matter what.

It is a stock block and the the original stock crank!!!. And relatively off the shelf con-rods. The smaller pipe is for the wastegate, they get asked that all the time. Just wanted something to make people go Hmmmmm? They spent nearly two years ironing out the injection system. But the short block is surprisingly stock. So are the front hubs and knuckles!!

Funny seems ATS has a good running one, and they don't even have full ECM capabilty. Dave's diesel (Rick Smith) isn't that bad, either, and I know he was down there but broke.
A tuned stock duramax will beat any other stock for stock truck out there. 500+ rwhp on a programmer and a 12.XX quarter with ease. Umm.
Most of the modded one's in the 2.5 -2.8 class compete very well also.
We have a lot more goodies coming that haven't made the bigger classes. Watch your back because the COMMON RAIL - is comming hard and fast. The duramax camp has 1 truck on #2 with over 1000rwph... and that is not even close to the 1500rwhp and 6000 to 7000rpms, we should see next year IF the block holds up. (Maybe the aluminum heads will give out first. LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL.)
BTW in all the stock classes we pulled we never lost to a ford once, and only lost once to a dodge at Shied. We pulled probably over 30 times, if not over 40 and up to 4 times a week.
Good luck next year.
