The people rebuilt the motor, but forgot to torque the head...Needless to say, it became an oily/saltwater mess on their first outing. Luckily they had a decent trolling motor to get them back to port.

Pretty comfortable with gettin the motor back in order, but would appreciate and tricks or tips on the drive etc. Darn thing has no parachute or wheels, so I am a fish out of water on those aspects....LOL

p.s. Am also looking for information on converting to fresh water cooled.

Did you see the rust on the head?....Yes the boat is nice, but there is some work.

I rebuilt one of those engines a couple years ago. Not hard, but i wouldn't trust that one due to all the internal rust.
A truck engine is basically the same thing, just make sure it has a separate intake and not the integral cast on one.

 

Mike if you're going to the trouble of a motor rebuild anyway go to the salvage yard and get one that didn't have a universal corrosive like saltwater sitting in it for years. It'll save you grief over the long run, you only want to rebuild it once.

Going real well, just got back from the Spear Spring fire, in between Burns and John Day on 395. Got it quick so it only grew to 400 acres, waiting to go out again...hurry up and wait...story of this job

 

Does anyone have an idea on where I can get a complete package to rebuild the head for this 250? (Valves, springs, keepers etc)...Summit had a great price on a package for the 302 I hopped up, but I didn't find anything from them or Jegs for a 250. Worse comes to worse, I guess I will have to buy each seperately.

 

Well Not sure on the rebuild package for the 250. I though it being I/O it would possibly be Fresh water cooled (FWC). I could be wrong here, but raw sea water stright to any marinized motor usally means rather short life span. Good luck, if it was OMC or Mercruiser I have links for that stuff seeing I ahve been working on this prodject.






I bought it not running last Sept. Started really working on it in June, got it running, found that the inner and outter exhaust housing cover gaskets were bad. Went to replace them and busted bolts.

Now I have this mess to deal with, Mmmmm Busted 1/4-20 bolts rusted and stuck in an aluminum alloy power head.




Soaked for a week with Kroil, and WD-40, Vise Griped (Didn't work), Drilled out the center and tried easy outs (Not so easy, didn't work) Let soak for two weeks with my my WD_40/Kroil blend. No good. Going to have machinist freind deal with this issue as I am leary about using a torch to try and free them up on a 36 year old motor that I know works.

 

Mercruiser Stern Drive...Would appreciate the links.

Don, nice boat and motor in the works. Not knowing your serial # on the motor, I'm going to guess it is a 74-76, V - 4, and 65 - 90 HP? Actually looks like a 75HP. Great motor.

 

Close 1971 Evenrude 100HP V-4 with Hydro-electric shift. Motor runs, this has just stalled my sea trials.
