My F-250 460 has a front-sump pan!

Ok, got my wrecker 460 yesterday, still sitting proudly in the back of my '77 F150 (can't get the hoist to reach it yet .. it's in the middle of the box, and damn if it don't want to move!).

I was shocked to see it had a front-sump oil pan on it. From all that I read here I expected a rear-sump pan from a truck motor (came out of '79 F250 camper special .. I know 'cause I saw it in there).

Any concerns about that in my '77 (has 351M with C6 right now)? I guess for 4-wheel drivin' and all-out drag racing a rear-sump is desirable .. worth switching to a rear still? I was thinking it might actually help with header clearance to have a front-sump pan?

Forgot to mention .. being the dummy I am, I forgot to tell the boneyard to give me the mounts from the F250 .. and so they cut them .. so I will probably be looking at those conversion mounts to go from my 351M .. does that require the rear pan then?

Was the donor truck a 2 wheel drive? I would bet that front sump pans have clearance issues with the differential in a 4X4 truck.

4x4 requires rear sump pan....you can look for a middle/late 80's truck (4x4) with a 460 to get the pan, oil pickup, and pump. Conversion mounts are typically needed for the 4x4 version, cuz 2wd perches are different than 4x4's.

or you can get the oil pump and pickup and motor mounts new from summitracing.com or wherever. summit part #TRD-4226 for the mounts and #FMS-M-6675-A460 for the oil pan kit

Thanks guys, I did indeed forget to say that both trucks (donor F250 and my F150) are 2WD.

So, knowing that, would you recommend I stay with the front-sump pan? The truck will be occasional street driven (not daily driver, never winter etc) with occasional Friday night (street class) drag runs for fun perhaps.

I haven't even had the pan off to check condition yet so it might need replacing anyway.
