I have to agree with Poppie.... The 6.4 better be a really reliable rig...I have to believe after a few removals for normally easy stuff to fix...the integrity of the cab/frame will just not be the same... I'm sure it is no big deal and the mechanics doing the work have been extensively trained...but that pic of the cab hovering over the frame is just looking for a problem...

From what I hear it's a 6 hour plus job to remove and replace the cab, a lot of money if the only problem is a leaky oil line going to the turbo. One bad 10 cent o-ring and 6 plus hours labor.
Very expensive for a after warranty repair. Most uf us does not have a way to raise the cab.

So true. Ford may lose acceptance in remote parts of the world where a heated garage with an overhead gantry crane is an unheard of luxury.

It wasn't the o-ring that went on my turbo, but the oil line itself. Faulty part that should have never passed QC. But I hear you. Tech told me Ford paid 6.1 hours to remove and replace cab. Since this was his first, it took him six hours just to pull the cab and another four to put it back. Too bad since I bet Ford is just going to pass this cost to Navistar. If I had to pay, bill would have been $932.

They didn't us a crane, but a standard floor lift, but probably still a luxury.

Man thats tons of work to get to a fuel pump. I thought having to drop the tank was bad.

I always thought why not mount the fuel pump on the frame rail near the fuel tank like the custom car builders. Quick and easy to replace or maintain a fuel pump mounted on the frame rail.

Ford better iron everything out because its there name on the truck not navistar.

I try to do all the work I can on my truck. Thinking of changing my turbo, there is no way I could raise the cab in my shop. I have 12' walls, not enough room. Man good luck after 100,000 miles or 5 years.

Not to worrry, I'm sure in the very near future Toyota will take over the truck world (probably buy out Ford, Dodge AND Chevy) as we know it and such foolishness as twin turbos and lifting bodies and cabs etc etc will be a distant memory !!!
I cant promise it will be a very attractive truck, but I'm sure it will be built juuuust right .

Naaah, I'm sure Ford can get it right....right ????

Having to take the cab off to work on the truck really turns me off. I enjoy working on my truck. The only time you ever know that something was fixed correctly is when you do it yourself. Having to take the cab complete eliminates the average joes capability to do routine repairs.

45 years ago many farmers proclaimed they would never buy a tractor with a cab on it as it had to be taken off to do many service operations.

In 1959 my dad refused to buy the new chevy until the dealer removed the factory installed radio as it was unneeded complexity.

In 1967 it was disc brakes? Are you kidding? Why the "H" would anyone want disc brakes?

The world keeps turning and things keep changing.

Since when was working on a computer controlled beast of a motor with two of the most complex pieces of equipment (dual turboes) something the average joe out of high school could work on...

I think that it's pretty dumb engineering that you would have to remove the cab just to get to the fuel pump or many other items. But in a way I can also see it as a nessecity (sp?), just think of all the emmisions crap they stuff under there as well as tryin to cut costs at every corner. But when you think about it cars aren't really that far off, with the amount of stuff that they stuff under the hood sometimes it seems like you have to take half the parts off the thing just to get to the part you are trying to replace. I don't think Ford had much of a choice with this one. What are Dodge and GM doing when they have repairs like this on their trucks?

Who needs to be fired is the marketing department. Ford should focus on a reliable I6 simple diesel Not some teenaged boy engine who cares only about the numbers on paper being bigger than chevy or dodge.
