Honest answer is run the Rotella, I personally run Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 and have had no issues but I couldn't say in good faith that it is any better than the Shell. I know many others here have had great success in running the Rotella.
I can get either Rotella 5w-40 full syn for 16$ or Mobile 1 5w-40 full syn for 22$. Is it worth paying extra for Mobile 1? What do you guys think??
I have recently read a couple of articles that talk very highly of Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 (not the Rotella T Triple Protection). It is a full synthetic so it has a good base stock (it is Group III or maybe a Group IV - someone else can fill you in on this) AND the additive package has been highly reviewed. Seems to be a VERY GOOD oil for a very reasonable price and it is readily available. Lots of folks here use it and recommend it.
Interestingly enough, it is also highly recommended in severe motorcycle applications due to the high detergent content (necessary for diesels) and the anti-wear additives.
That being said, I have read that the Mobil 1 is good also. I just haven't seen anyone really brag on it.
Im currently running Rotella, but am now able to get Mobile 1. Just wondering if I should switch
Well you can save $6 per and you know how to spell Rotella
Seriously, we run Rotella and see no reason to switch.

UOAs consist of checking for metal on drain plug magnet. Dyed ULSD fuel with no additives. Never been reflashed. Total parts replaced; one turbo,
two EGR valves, forgot to reconnect the wires on the second one at 151,360 miles.
I've run Rotella-T Syn 5W/40 for a couple years now...I've been happy. But I recently did an experiment to see if the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5W/40 was worth the extra cost. "Wow" is all I can say. It is a better oil, a higher class of full synthetic. The truck runs noticeably smoother. I'm very tempted to put it in next time...even at the extra cost.
i used to run rottella 5-40 but recently switched to mobil 1 this oil change and i did notice th truck does seem to run a little better? my next change is going to be r.p to see how it reacts and because i got a case for 56 bucks!
pepboys is advertising $6 off on 12 qts, but last time I checked it was near $8qt. Anyone know what it prices out at now? It has been praised highly to help in milage along with the RP synthetic gear lube in the diffs and transfer case for 4x's. I was wondering about which is better also as I am going to be doing my own from now on. Dont want to start an oil war, but which is the best synthetic for the PSD?

Lots of previous threads on this. A good place to start is w/ the link below. The TDR review that you access w/ the link did not look at Royal Purple or Mobil 1 or Schaeffer 9000. I am getting a virgin oil analysis of the Schaeffer, just for curiosity. In general, I believe a $3.00 per quart oil changed at 4000-5000 mile intervals is better than an $8.00 per quart oil changed at 7500. The viscosity characteristic of the oils drop off pretty quick after 5000 miles in these 6.0L engines.
bismic I know, I tried mob 1 in my goldwing and at about 3500 it was hard to shift etc. Of course it had a trailer to pull and me and wife. But I am willing to spend a little more to improve overal milage and like I said RP has had good reviews just dont know if it worth $8/qt vs the $22/gal mobil 1 or the other at wm for $16.

Thanks for the link
Another link I found ........
Mobil-1 automotive oils all contain small amounts of moly - about 100 to 200 ppm. This can cause clutch slippage in wet sump applications in some motorcycles. I've only heard of this being a problem in Honda Shadows.
