From what I've seen on other sites, running the Spartan tune with DPF delete nets some pretty impressive MPG reports. Probably won't see it in mountain terrain, but in relatively flat eastern states, yeah, possible.
Now, if he was claiming 23 with a truck running WITH the DPF, I'd call BS in a heart beat.

Come on man - if you think for one minute that a car salesman isn't likely to tell you anything he/she feels will get your name on the dotted line - you have a lot to learn and have lived in a cave for several decades. Is it right? NO. Is it constant reality? YES. Not trying to beat you down, but come on.
Before I spent $43k on my new truck, I actually did something pretty revolutionary - I DID SOME RESEARCH. I knew going into the deal that the new 6.4's were getting worse MPG than the older diesels because of the DPF. Know what? I still bought it and glad I did. The new F250 truck and engine are much better IMO than the previous models at long hauls with my heavy travel trailer, and I don't mind cleaning up the emmissions so this world can breath a little better - it is the wave of the future anyway.
If I baby the truck I get 14 mpg around the city, and 18+ on the highway - around 10 hauling the TT. Yeah - not the greatest, but I bought this truck for hauling purposes and it does that in spades, and I bought it with my eyes open knowing the pros and cons because I did my research and didn't rely on what a car salesman told me...
Instead of whining because you did not do your research, and getting into a no-win pi$$ing match on a "his word against yours" battle - you should just chaulk it up to on-the-life-training and get on down the road. Sell the truck before too many miles gets on it, and maybe boycott that dealership if it makes you feel better (but, I warn you, every other dealer has salesmen that lie also).
Just calling it as I see it.

Just returned from a GA -- PA trip: I-75 to I - 85 to I - 485 (great short cut). Then I - 81 to I - 77 to US - 19 to I - 79 to I - 68.
Then a little bit of I- 43; PA 857; PA 711 and US route 30 to Jennerstown.
Long story short, a bunch of hills.
Pulling my 12' van trailer, total weight trailer and load, 5,000#.
My truck with 4.11 rears.
Average mpg, up and down; actual from consumption,
RIGHT AT 8 MPG! UGGGHHHH!
I love the truck, but say 35 cents per mile sucks. This is way worse than first 5,000 miles, and way worse now after the flash for "see your truck in regen".
15,000 miles.
Enough said.

Yeah the new flash sucks. I havn't done it yet but most everyone is seeing the same. The new flash makes these trucks regen even more. I'm headed the Spartan way. Looks like these guys are getting awesome mileage.

I really like diesels, but unless I have to pull for a living, I'll wait to get another one. The manufacturers will get it sorted out in a few short years, I hope. They can't afford not to when a V-10 Ford, 6.0 GM or Hemi Dodge will get almost as good of mileage as a diesel without the huge up front outlay and increased maintenance costs of diesel. But if I had to pull for a living, I definately would be looking into a DPF delete and Spartan tune or equivalent.

I don't know if I'd be so hard on him, the mileage on these new trucks really does suck. Diesels, whether it be cars or trucks, are historically great for power and mileage. Every diesel I've had has been great on fuel, until I got this hog. My salesman told me that if you're buying a one ton diesel, you're not worried about mpg's, but what these trucks are getting stock is rediculous, even you have to admit that. I see that you are in the extreme minority, getting 14 to 18 mpg, but let's take that away and give you one that gets 8mpg and let's see if you are a little pissed. He is wasting his time if he thinks he'll get anything done with the dealer or ford, but I guarantee that if enough people complain, something will get done for future model years. In this economy, ford can't afford to ignore the voices of the people that keep them running. Don't be so fast to judge people that are giving their opinion.
Ok - so maybe I was a bit rough - sorry. However, I find it hard to believe people don't do any research on $40k+ purchases. My sales guy told me the same thing - that people are saying they get 20+ MPG - only I knew when he was telling me that was BS.
That was my point, but I guess I could have stated it a bit more diplomatically.

I have to agree 8 MPGs is downright awful. That's what my work truck gets while empty...but it weighs 33,000 lbs.
I think something isn't quite right with your truck if it is in regen that much. I brought my truck in back in May, which was right after I bought it, to be reflashed to the latest program. My truck goes into regen every 3-400 miles, and only does it for a few minutes. Just today it went into regen for a minute or two, then I had to stop. On the way home it didn't do it, and in the other 50 highway miles I've put on it today it never went into regen.
Now, that being said, I do treat my fuel with Power Service Diesel Kleen every tank. Supposed to increase the cetane a few points, as every pump I've ever seen says the cetane rating is only 42, where our engines are supposed to have 45. I think this additive helps keep my MPGs decent and keep my regens down...

I agree. My truck would go into regen about every 200 miles on this last trip for 10 to 15 minutes.
BUT, another point, maybe part of the trouble. I thought Flying J was the best fuel and up to PA I stop only at Flying J, and in PA I went to BP. Maybe time for me to change.
I think I will give SUNOCO a chance. I did not know that Flying J declared bankrupcy recently and perhaps, and only with no knowledge to the contrary, they might be cutting, like everyone else, and not putting in what they did in the past.
Only an observation. But, like you said, we need and want 45 cetane, and I am afraid we are getting much less. Time will tell. If they can get away with it on the stock excange, why not in a gas station. Ask the manager, ask the clerk, ask, and you GET:
DUH?????????????????????

There are guys on here that get 17-19 MPG stock and you find it hard to believe that I can get 23 MPG after removing the overweight DPF and tuning the truck?? I guess we'll just say that I'm making the #'s up to impress myself and fool everyone else because I have so much to gain from it, haha.

I have 4000 miles on my 08 f250 supercab 2wd 373s gears..goes into re-gen every 275-300 miles and the regen lasts for 20 miles...most all my traveling unloaded and at 70-80mph with a small amount of city driving...average mpg 14-16..hand figured... I can watch my fuel guage drop when truck goes into re-gen...this is a poor program as with ULSD fuel and traveling at freeway speeds this truck should not have to regen at all..
