Will it make it to Alaska?????
I need to buy a truck to go from Ariz to NY to Alaska. Toyota is the best bet for reliability, but one test drive in the F150 and I gotta have it. Looking at 99 4.2 5sp 2wd (can't afford v8, don't want auto or 4wd). I'm getting dizzy reading all these messages, can someone please make sense of it all. Can i depend on this truck to not leave me stranded somewhere along the Alaska Hwy? Can it tolerate the extreme cold? Extended warranty? Will it climb the Canadian Rockies without bugging out? Worthwhile mods for $500 or less? HELP

I have a 2000, same as you described. I bought it new and have done all maintenance. It has been well cared for and has 72,000 miles on it. All I have had to replace so far is front brakes and 4 tires. I know there are many who bash the 4.2, and perhaps for some of the early model years, it might be justified (to an extent). However, all I can attest to is MY experience. I would get in my truck right now and head for Alaska (from Alabama) without a moment's hesitation. I have been "lucky" I guess. I have had no problems with anything.
That having been said, how many miles are on the '99? Do you know its previous owner /service history. Check for any recalls and see if they have been done.
There are those who would call you foolish for even considering the F-150 with a 4.2. I am not one. Do your due diligence, and if you are comfortable with the truck's service history, buy it if you like it. Check everything from A-Z, then recheck. Then, hit the road.
(based on my experience, expect about 19 mpg running 70 mph w/ 3.55 rear end)
Best of luck,
Brian A

JJ,I have a 97 F150,4.2V6,77,000 miles, only had the air go out,but other then that, nothing wrong.I did research on it and found it had 6 recalls done, including the infamous timing cover leak.I talked to the previous owner and the truck was well maintained. I would drive it anywhere!!About the V6,ide buy another if i had the chance.Good luck in your hunt for that F150!!!Oh,about FRAM filters,go to the "OIL" forums and read about them.THEY SUCK!!!!!!!

One thing to mention, the 4.2 is a nice engine for towing a small trailer or hauling a motorcycle. But if you need power to pull a larger rig or a pile of weight in the bed, you will not be impressed once you hit the mountains!
The 4.2 F150 is for city cowboys. Mine makes a better grocery cart than car hauler.
On its own however, it is great for road trips. If you just have a suitcase in the back, you will not find a more comfortable ride in a truck.
Just my .02,
/Kris
