Does anyone know where I can get some parts for my 1979 F150 Motor? Its a 4.9, 300c.i. inline 6. Im looking to get rid of the egr carb spacer and replace it with a regular spacer. Has anyone done this yet with maybe an older year spacer with non egr that fits the same? Also what about carburetors? Do they have any aftermarket ones?

 

There are lots of performance parts for these engines. I would not bother with changing spacers. You will need to enlarge your carburetion if you plan on boosting horsepower. There is a four barrel intake manifold available for these engines. There also are headers, cams and all the regular stuff available.

You might start by googling Cliffor 6 = 8.

your best bet is a 4 barrel manifold with a 350 to 500 cfm carb
the use efi exhaust manifolds
if you go into the motor there are some good cams that
will really wake it up

heh..... sounds like fun. I was just looking to clean up that area a bit. I dont like having that EGR spacer there with a thousand rubber plugs on it. I like to get rid of all the emissions stuff. I feel like Im stickn it to the man that way.

 

I did it. you'll probably want a non egr distributor. search the 300 forum here for all the mods, like chebby rockers, efi manies, 390 holley carb offenhauser dp intake, etc...

 

Just remember that having an EGR valve is not a bad thing... It injects exhaust gases that are stripped of oxygen, and this is a cooling effect (kinda like nitrous, in a way) and allows you to run more ignition timing, thus more power.

I think Clifford's site is cliffordperformance.com , but the fordsix.com site is great too. I once saw a '78 F150 with a 4.9 in it, and the owner had it cammed, dual exhaust, racing clutch, roller rockers, and 4 barrel edelbrock. It was by far the best sounding inline six I have ever heard. Sounded like a dragster idling! The truck was jet black and lowered. I hope some day the new owner will join this forum! (was in Calgary) It was for sale at a car lot for about $6000... Worth every penny in my opinion! Estimated 300 hp buildup.

 

Start reading just about every post on this Forum and the Ford Six Performance Forum. Then make a plan and go for it.
Do a search here for Col Flashman and you will find what can be done to make an ultimate street machine.
Comp, Crane, Isky, Reed...all grind cams for the I6. Offy and Clifford have intake manifolds. Clifford, Hedman, etc make headers...some use EFI exhaust manifolds for a cheap upgrade.

 

This meaning delete the old POS carb spacer and get a machine shop to make another one? On the 300 I6? also I have the factor spacer but everything is plugged in that and the only vacuum hose I have going to the carburetor is the hose for the advancing timing thing on the distributor. Anything wrong with that?

 

Nothing at all wrong as long as the carb, timing& advance curve are correctly calibrated

I have had my engine & trans rebuilt. Installed a Clifford 6= 8 manifold, Holley 390 cfm carb, and efi 4.9 exhaust manifolds. Tuned carb idles perfect but under load I get a stumble on acceleration. I have to feather gas pedal and was told to tighten lock nut on accelerator pump. Still a little stumble on acceleration. Tightened nut 1/4 turn. Also never replaced Cat convertor would I get more power better gas mileage if I replaced catalytic convertor. Thanks Mike

That stumble is usually reduced/eliminated by going up to a #37 squirter. You are most likely experiencing a lean stumble...just needs a little more squirt from the accelerator pump.

Actually, you might be able to pick it up locally. Some parts houses do carry Holley parts.
