Actually, only one. IIRC AbandonedBronco ran into the same thing at his parts houses in Boise. I have at least one here in Spokane just a few blocks from the house where they stock them individually. I suppose they come in pairs for double pumpers but few of us if any run those on our engines.

why are efi plugs better in your 83?

For two reasons, I believe. One, they reach further into the combustion chamber, so the point of initial combustion is better located. The second is that they are more in the stream of gas flow and run cooler.
