VIN Codes

Anybody know how to tell what rear end I have off the VIN? I know you can but I don't know which character to look at or what to look for. I know I have posi because I jacked it up and checked but I am curious what gears and I bought the truck used.

Thanks.

Mine is blank. Although, my axles are tagged.
Does anyone know of a site where I can learn how to decipher my VIN?

monsta, what that link calls the 'vehicle sticker' is what Ford calls the "Vehicle Certification Label". It should be on the door frame somewhere.

I found the label and have decifered most of the info. I re-read my previous post. The whole vehicle cert. label isn't blank, just the axle part. I thought that was rather odd...

Mine is blank, too, monsta. There is a 'UTC' roughly under it, but saying it corresponds to 'axle' would be a stretch.

I figure mine has 4.30 gears since it runs around 2100 @ 65mph. I've only had it a week and those gears let it really LEAVE. No wonder folks get 8 mpg! Once you realize it will take off like that it is hard to ease out into traffic anymore.;-)

That's pretty strange that the label has no axle info. There should be a metal tag on the differential housing that states the ratio. A "3 73" will be an open 3.73 gear. A "3L73" indicates a 3.73 with limited slip. Same format for the 4.30 gears.

item 3: W21
item 7: M

2001 F250, CC, LWB, 4x4, V-10, Auto trans, 4.30 limited slip

VIN Codes

I tried this a while back and ended up going to the dealer because of a discussion similar to this but I also checked the tag on the rear only to find some code that even the dealer was not sure of. I did finally figure out that the front end also has a code but it actually tells you what gears you have!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Dec-01 AT 10:11 PM (EST)]My door tag was blank on the rear axle part too. Guess I will have to crawl under there this weekend and take a look at the rear end.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Dec-01 AT 00:05 AM (EST)]You know mikeking, I couldn't find the gearing on my rear axle. I only found it on the front. Is yours a 4x2 or 4x2? If you don't find it, post your RPM at 60mph (in overdrive) (indicate auto or 6 spd!)and all us will let you know what your gearing is!:7

VIN Codes

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Dec-01 AT 11:47 AM (EST)]Mikeking, First off the vin # does not in any way indicate the gear ratio. If you can't find a tag anywhere, then take the others advise and list your year, model, engine and rpm at a specific speed. One of us here will surely be able to relate this to you.

Also for those who found questions with comparing your vin # to the link NOMO provided...... The vin combinations change every few years so you need to check the chart for your specific year, also as I looked back this chart is for non-Super Duty trucks. (20 yrs investigating recovered stolen vehicles)

interesting that some of you guys don't have the ratio stamped? mine was stamped both front (dana 60) and rear (sterling 10.5) on my 2002 as 3.73.... not that it matters anymore for me. :+

Woo Hoo! I guessed right! Do I get a prize?

Thanks for confirming that information harleymsn. It's getting a lot tougher to find some of this kind of info anymore.

Happy Holidays! :-X12
