Smile GPS's Who make the best one on the market Portable

I would like to buy a GPS and would like to know who has the best GPS for the dollar? I am looking a a portable one. Do they have any that tells you about the traffic ahead of you, like you are going into a traffic jam?

I agree with Garmin. Look for their automotive Nuvi series. Lots of models depending on your needs.

Garmin 60CSX series.

You can use use it the vehicle or take it out. Uses 2AA cells, runs for 40 hours on Lithiums.

The maps are not that great, but do work.

It's not the optimal one for vehicles though, as the screen is too small.

I looked at a lot of models and brands before deciding on a Garmin 76CSx. Great feature set, the unit is water proof (just in case I drop it in the creek or get caught in the rain), and the color display very easy to read.

I have a Garmin C-530 Street Pilot.
I just wanted a basic unit, which it is.
Very accurate.
Runs about 4 hours on internal battery, or use power plug on longer trips.
Recharges using USB cable from computer.

Try getting service for it when it dies or call the customer service number of the others. Your GPS OEM goes out of business your GPS can become almost worthless.

Plus, the Garmins tend to not only hold their value (I have sold my older ones on E-Bay for almost the same I bought them), they do not break down often, and stand up to abuse. I only had one so far break and Garmin replaced it even though it was slightly out of warranty.

My GPS many times sits on the dash in the hot sun inside my vehicle, on and off road, right in front of the steering wheel.

I have never purchased anything else but Garmin. I went from a 350 to the 650 for the extra size.

It works excellently for me. I have noticed that the NUVI edition for automobiles does not do much about detailing creeks and streams (I canoe alot) or national parks but it performs flawlessly for driving.

I have only found 2 errors with road names but they were gravel backroads and I figured it out anyway.

Choosing a GPS is trial and error for sure and the axiom "you get what you pay for" holds true for them. I would recommend borrowing systems from friends and family (like I did) and make your decision that way.
