'01 F150 5.4, sputter while driving

My truck has been sputtering while driving for some time now, and it is on and off. Sometimes I'll go for a couple months with nothing, then it'll start doing it again. It seems like maybe a misfire, or multiple misfires? It used to 'seem' to do it when the drivetrain was between acceleration and slow down. But now it is also doing it during acceleration. I have taken it to the dealership, but of course it wouldn't do it when they had it and their equipment shows no problem.

Anybody had similar experience?

Thanks!

Welcome to FTE flytierjjj. We need more information about your truck. What year, model, engine, trans, mileage, and does the check engine light (CEL) come on when it is sputtering?

It's a 2001 F150, 5.4L V8, Automatic Trans, 4x4, with 91000 miles. I have never seen the Check Engine light come on.

thanks!

Have the spark plugs ever been changed? Fuel filter? MAF sensor cleaned?

Fuel Filter yes, plugs and MAF sensor...no. I'll check those out and see if it helps. Better direction that I got from the dealership. Thanks!

Another consideration - water in fuel

Always consider water in your gas tank when you have intermittent misfiring. The widespread use of ethanol in gasoline has made this less common than it used to be, but it still happens. A sudden drop in temperature or rise in humidity can cause water to condense inside your tank even if your fuel supply is reliable. I once blew $140 at a "service station" for this very problem which they never even considered. I called my dealer 500 miles away, they diagnosed the problem over the phone & I cured it completely in 10 minutes with 2 cans of "dry gas" to the tank. More than a little water in your tank necessitates draining it completely, though.
